ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (10/07/2024)

(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation, Division of Banking, is warning statewide folks about a new scam that seeks to take advantage of student loan uncertainty. Scammers contact student loan borrowers and make false promises that they can guarantee lower monthly payments or loan forgiveness, often demanding upfront fees. Borrowers who are contacted about these scams should call the State Attorney General’s Student Loan Helpline at 1-800-455-2456 or check SAC’s website.

(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has announced a donation of multiple electric vehicle chargers from the electric mobility company EVBox to the state. Visitors to Illinois State Parks will be able to charge their electric vehicles while camping overnight. The chargers will be placed at Illinois state parks, historic sites, museums, beaches, and other public areas. Go to the State DNR website for more information.

(SPRINGFIELD) During this National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Illinois Department of Public Health is reminding the public that early detection is the most effective way to prevent the deadly disease, which is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women. Officials say regular mammograms can help find breast cancer at an early stage when treatment is most successful. This is why anyone who might have put off getting screended in recent years, due to the pandemic or other reasons, should do so ASAP.

(SPRINGFIELD) The vacant block in downstate Springfield across from the Governor’s Mansion could be transformed into a city park. It was earlier this year that the Illinois General Assembly allocated $4 million in the existing state budget for improvements of the block, however an environmental study must be conducted first. The empty lot just north of the Mansion was once the site of the city’s YMCA building that was torn down in 2017.
