(OLNEY)  A surface low pressure approaching the Upper Midwest has a cold front moving further south, therefore after a dry day on this Thursday, bringing us a slight chance of rain late tonight, but a better chance of rain, possibly thunderstorms, moving thru the day and night tomorrow – another high pressure ridge will set up for the weekend giving us a mostly dry sky Saturday into next week – listen for updates.

 

(NEWTON)  In state news – Governor Rauner has signed a law that makes state government purchasing less work – the new law eliminates administrative delays for universities and government agencies that enter joint-purchasing agreements to increase cost-saving buying power  :  meanwhile, lawmakers are preparing to return to Springfield for debate on the Governor’s recent amendatory veto on the state school funding bill – the State Senate will convene this coming Sunday while the State House returns to work next Wednesday.

 

(OLNEY)  The Illinois State Fair is underway  :  the ever-popular butter cow was unveiled yesterday in the Dairy Building – for more than 90 years, the butter cow has been one of the most attended displays at the State Fair  :  the Illinois Department of Labor will be conducting routine inspections of all the amusement rides and attractions on the Fairgrounds – that includes the more than 65 rides on the Carnival Midway, Adventure Village, and Happy Hollows pavilions  :  today’s Preview Day will feature the annual Twilight Parade starting at 5:30 this evening – then the gates open at 7:00 with discounted carnival rides and a free grandstand concert at 7:30 tonight featuring the classic rock band “Foghat”  :  tomorrow is County Fairs and Horse Racing Day on the Fairgrounds as more than 70 County Fair Queens and over 100 Expositions and Fairs from across the state will be represented – it’s also the first day of harness racing at the Fair’s one-mile dirt track – then tomorrow night, the Abe Lincoln Quarter Midgets races are at 6:30 and on stage at 7:30 is Chase Rice with Runaway June and Chris Cavanagh  :  Saturday is Kid’s Day  : Sunday is Veterans Day and Gold Star Families Day  :  next Monday is Senior Citizens Day and Scouts Day  :  the Illinois State Fair runs this weekend thru next Sunday night – for more details, logon at  www.illinois.gov/statefair/info.

 

(NEWTON)  The 2017 Farm Progress Show, the nation’s largest outdoor farm event, is getting ready for the 64th annual event to be held later this month, August 29th thru 31st, at its permanent site up in Macon County, near Decatur – this year’s Farm Progress Show will feature over 600 exhibitors displaying new farm equipment, tractors, combines, and farm implements, plus seed & crop production products, additional farm supplies & services, and much more – some of the show’s most popular activities are the field demonstrations, which includes side-by-side tillage techniques, tractor & combine performance comparisons, and more – also, the livestock area includes horse training demonstrations and the newest equipment and animal health products – plus, restored antique machinery, entertainment, and plenty of concessions are also all included – for details, check the website, at  www.farmprogressshow.com.

 

(NEWTON/OLNEY)  There are two regular monthly meetings scheduled for this Thursday night  :  the Jasper County Board meets tonight in the County Office Building in Newton, beginning at 7:00 – the agenda includes the various committee reports, plus several New Business items and more – also an executive session to discuss personnel  :  the Richland County Board meets tonight in the County Jail Meeting Room in Olney, starting at 7:00 – the agenda includes the various committee and department reports, plus a few New Business items and more – also an executive session to discuss personnel and negotiations, if requested  :  the Richland County Board’s Finance Committee will meet an hour earlier in the County Jail Meeting Room, beginning at 6:00  :  all of these meetings are open to the public.

 

(OLNEY)  The Richland County High School is inviting all incoming freshmen and new students to the school’s “Freshmen First” event coming up next Monday morning, August 14th, from 8:30 to 10:30, in the RCHS Sliva Auditorium – it’s at this time that the students attending will have the opportunity to visit each of their classes, meet their teachers, and discuss topics relevent for every freshmen student to know – for more information and/or details, call the Richland County High School office in Olney, at  618-393-2191.

 

(NEWTON)  A note from the Jasper County School District – the Open House at the Ste. Marie Elementary School has been set for next Monday evening, August 14th, from 6:00 to 8:00 – while Mr. Josh Benefiel will speak both at 6:00 and 7:00 respectively, students are encouraged to bring their school supplies, plus students, parents, and/or guardians, will have the chance to meet all the Ste. Marie School teachers as well.

 

(NEWTON)  Here’s some notes from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources  :  wingshooting clinics are scheduled throughout the rest of this summer and through the fall in Illinois at IDNR sites, cooperating gun clubs, and hunting preserves, with most of them conducted on weekends – the wingshooting clinics are for youth ages 10 to 15 and women to provide instruction on safely firing a shotgun at a moving target  :  hunters can apply through August 31st, three weeks from today, for the Illinois 2017 Free Upland Game Hunt Permit program – the applications are available online at the IDNR website  :  meanwhile, online applications are being accepted for Illinois Free Dove Hunting Permits – it’s on a first come, first served basis through August 25th, two weeks from tomorrow – that is for any permits that remain  :  for more on these and all things outdoors in Illinois, check the IDNR website online, at  www.dnr.illinois.gov.

 

(OLNEY/NEWTON)  This coming Saturday, August 12th, has been designated as City Wide Garage Sale Day in Olney, with various garage sales throughout the community  :  meanwhile, in Newton, the Scott Avenue Christian Church invites one and all to UPCYCLE, that is “Using Possessions to Connect Your Community and Love Everyone” – it’s an “all free” rummage sale for the community with something on hand for everyone – simply stop by the church, at 404 Scott Avenue in Newton, this Saturday morning, from 8:00 to 11:00 – to get more information or details, call the church office, at  618-783-3744.

 

(OLNEY)  The 2017 Annual Fall Kids Mall of Richland County Shopping Day is set for this coming Saturday morning, August 12th, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, at the east edge of Olney – it’s for Richland County children, preschool thru 8th grade, with registration from 9:00 to 12:00 in the morning – there are no financial requirements to participate and families are invited to stop by if they are in need of clothing assistance – all children receive new items, including socks, athletic shoes, toiletries, and clothing – plus backpacks & minimum school supplies will be donated & distributed by the Salvation Army in Olney – the Dental Safari will also be on location – for details, call  618-869-2297  or email  This email address is being protected from spambots. (NEWTON/OLNEY)  All area blood donors are encouraged to get out and give blood at their next chance – here’s the list of all upcoming regional blood drives  :  this afternoon & evening at the Blood Donation Center in Effingham from 12:15 to 7:15  :  also today at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Newton from 1:00 to 6:00  :  all blood types and platelets are very much needed to help replenish the low area blood supply.

 

REMINDERS :       
    A fundraising benefit “spaghetti dinner” is this Sunday night at “The Venue” in Olney, at 303 South Fair Street – it’s serving from 5:00 until 8:00 with all donations accepted at the door – also a bake sale and raffle with specialty baskets with tickets available – proceeds to help Bev Ziegler with medical expenses and bills


    The Noble Chowder is coming up this Saturday in the Village Park with serving by the bulk or bowl to start at 11:00 – there will be other food available, plus activities and more – raffle tickets and quilt tickets are still on sale at the Noble Village Hall – all are invited to the Noble Chowder this coming Saturday


    The 6th Annual St. Thomas Duck Race is this Saturday morning at the Newton Aquatic Center, starting at 10:00 – ducks can be purchased this week at the St. Thomas School in Newton, the St. Thomas Catholic Church, the Peoples State Bank in Newton, and/or the Medicine Shoppe – get your ducks today
