(OLNEY)  As an elongated upper level disturbance moves thru by tonight, we’ll stay dry while any chance of snow or flurries will stay north of that I-70 line – but, a reinforced shot of Arctic air moves in today thru tomorrow & now that chance of snow Saturday has been removed from the forecast – simply dry & cold for the weekend, although a slight warm up Monday with some precip next Wednesday – listen for updates.


(NEWTON)  In state news – Illinois has launched a new statewide helpline to provide immediate assistance for those impacted by addiction to opioids and other substances – announced by the Governor this week, the helpline will provide a confidential outlet for individuals experiencing opioid use disorders, their families, and anyone affected 24 hours a day, seven days a week – it’s at  833-2FINDHELP – that’s  833-234-6343.


(OLNEY)  The State Fire Marshall’s Office and Illinois Fire Service Institute has jointly announced an intergovernmental agreement that streamlines the process for Illinois firefighters who complete IFSI courses to receive state certification – the new terms grants the IFSI the state certification equivalency for its end-of-course examinations – this will eliminate the requirement imposed upon Illinois firefighters who attended IFSI courses to take both a final end-of-course exam & an OSFM exam in order to receive state certification – the agreement takes effect on January 1st, 2018 – great news for firefighters throughout Illinois.

(OLNEY)  The City of Olney would like to make citizens in Olney aware that the contractor for the city’s curbside recycling program will be on holiday break from Monday, December 25th, 2017, thru Friday, January 5th, 2018, that’s starting two weeks from next Monday – therefore the curbside recycling program will be on hold during that time frame – the contractor will resume normal curbside pickup on Monday, January 8th, 2018, & will be prepared to pick up extra recyclables – the public’s cooperation is appreciated.


(NEWTON)  The Jasper County Toys for Kids is still accepting donations of new toys for the upcoming distribution, which is a week from today, on December 14th, in Newton – monetary donations and the new toys can be dropped off at the Jasper County Extension Office in the Sunrise Youth Center and Community Building during regular office hours, or at any of the local participating businesses – especially needed are colors and drawing supplies, board games, and hats & gloves – all donations of either money or gifts are appreciated as the program provides gifts for over 200 Jasper County youth ages 13 and younger.

(NEWTON)  The Jasper County 5th & 6th Grade Bands and the Jasper County Junior High Band is having their 1st Annual Tablescape Contest – the public is encouraged to stop by the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce office in Newton to look over the tablescapes displayed from ten local businesses & to cast their vote – that’s tomorrow night from 5:00 to 7:00, Saturday afternoon from 12:00 to 3:00, & Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 6:00 – tickets for admission will only be sold at the Chamber Office, priced at $5 each for Friday and Saturday with the $10 price per person on Sunday to include refreshments and an entry pass for a Christmas House Walk, which will be held from 3:00 to 6:00 this Sunday at four homes in Newton – that will be held after the Newton Community High School Chorus performs their Christmas Program at the St. Thomas Church at 2:00 Sunday – proceeds to help the bands buy instruments, new uniforms, and music.


(OLNEY)  The Richland County Firefighters will conduct their annual door-to-door Food Drive tonight, picking up non-perishable food items in the communitieis of Calhoun, Parkersburg, and Dundas, beginning at 6:00 – those who’d like to help out are asked to place their food items in a bag and place those bags on their front porch with the porch light turned on – non-perishable food items can also be dropped off at several locations such as the Fire Department in Olney, the TNT Stop in Claremont, at Noble Foods, and at the Wakefield Mill – all food collected will be distributed to those in need in Richland County.


(NEWTON/OLNEY)  All area blood donors are encouraged to get out and give blood at their next chance – here’s the list of all upcoming regional blood drives  :  today at the Blood Donation Center in Effingham from 12:15 to 6:45  :  tomorrow at the Blood Donation Center in Effingham from 7:45 to 2:15  :  Monday at Carle Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney from 12:00 to 4:00  :  also next week in Beecher City, Oblong, Robinson, Dieterich, and Olney  :  all blood types and platelets are needed to help replenish low supplies.


    An “Open House” is this Sunday afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00 at the Heritage House Museum and the Mcksburg Schoolhouse along Kitchell Avenue in Olney – refreshments will be served and there will be live musical entertainment – all ages are invited to tour the Victorian Home and former schoolhouse this Sunday

    The Holy Cross Church in Wendelin will host its annual “Advent Evensong” this Sunday afternoon at 4:00 – includes a candelight service with scripture, organ music, English carols, and Austrian Christmas music, sung in German by the Wendelin Kloepfen Singers – refreshments available afterwards in the Parish Center – all are welcome – the service is dedicated to the memory of  Father David Braun

    The Beulah United Methodist Church south & back west of Sumner will host its 26th Annual “Travel Back to Bethlehem” Live Nativity this Saturday night from 5:30 to 8:30 – refreshments & music provided at the church, plus non-perishable food items will be collected to help those in need this holiday season

    The American Legion in Lawrenceville will host its Auxiliary’s Annual Christmas Auction this Saturday afternoon – doors open at 12 noon with the Auction to start at 1:00 – includes toys, jewelry, gift certificates, and much more – all proceeds to benefit area Veterans, children, youth, and educational projects

    It’s the 27th Annual “Breakfast with Santa” this Saturday morning from 7:30 to 10:00 at the St. Thomas Parish Center in Newton – at $3 per person, it includes a photo opportunity with Santa (bring your own camera), breakfast with donuts & drinks, free Kids ID provided by the Newton Masonic Lodge, door prizes, & holiday crafts – plus children 12 & under can visit Santa’s Mouse House for gifts – all are invited

    The American Legion Jasper Post #20 in Newton will host its monthly pork loin dinner tonight with serving to start at 6:00 – a great meal for a great price – the public is welcome to stop by – pay at the door

    A reminder that today is the “one day only” pick up date for the pre-ordered poinsettias sold by the Carle Richland Memorial Hospital Auxiliary – that’s from 8:00 this morning until 6:00 this evening at the Hospital’s Ambulance Building – those picking up the plants can use the building’s parking lot to the north
