* the Redbirds beat the Royals, 11-3 to take the first of four against KC this week
here’s how the other Midwestern teams did last night with a limited schedule played
* those that won were the Cubs, Pirates, Reds, and Twins
* those that lost were the Brewers and Tigers
* those that were idle were the White Sox, Indians, Braves, Astros, and Rangers
the Cardinals are back in Kansas City tonight to battle the cross-state Royals


(OLNEY)  at the Junior League Baseball Central Regional Tournament in Fort Wayne, Indiana
the eleven team tournament continued yesterday and last night with pool play action
* representing Illinois, Warren Park lost its first game of the tournament, falling to Ohio, 7-1
* now at 2-1, the Illinois team from Chicago will play this morning at 11:00 against Michigan
the top eight teams advance into the single elimination round portion of the tournament
* it will be quarter-final action tomorrow and the finals on Thursday, all up at Fort Wayne


(OLNEY/NEWTON)  area schools are getting ready for a busy fall schedule in High School Sports
with schools back in session next week, here’s a look at the opening dates for the various sports teams

* the Tiger Golfers open up next Monday, August 14th, at the Robinson Invitational Golf Tournament
* the Tiger/Lady Tiger Cross Country squads open up Tuesday, August 22nd, at the Fairfield Invitational
* the Soccer Tigers open up Wednesday thru Saturday, August 23rd–26th, at the Charleston Tournament
* the Lady Tiger Tennis squad opens their season on Thursday, August 24th, traveling to Mt. Carmel
* the Lady Tiger Volleyball team opens up that night, on Thursday, August 24th, at home against Oblong
* and Olney Tiger Football opens up Friday night, August 25th, hosting Lawrenceville in LIC action
for the teams at Newton Community High School in Newton
* the Newton Cross Country squads open their seasons on Tuesday, August 22nd, at the Fairfield Invite
* the Soccer Eagles open up Wednesday thru Saturday, August 23rd–26th, at the Charleston Tournament
* the Lady Eagle Volleyball squad opens up on Thursday night, August 24th, at Effingham High
* the Eagles open their football season Friday night, August 25th, at home against Georgetown-Ridge Farm
* and the Lady Eagle Tennis team opens up on Monday, August 28th, at home against Fairfield

(OLNEY)  the 2017 Olney Bicycle Classic is returning to Main Street in downtown Olney on Saturday, September 9th – it all starts with the Richland County Challenge Ride at 8:00 that morning, with registration required by 7:45 – then the TrustBank Family Ride begins at 9:30 with registration by 9:15 – the Kids Races for those ages 2 to 14 will start at 11:00 with registration required for all events by 10:45 – and the Pacific Cycle Stunt Show will finish things up at 12:15, plus Pacific Cycle employees will be on hand to do basic bike safety checks – concessions provided by the OCC Student Senate, plus free event t-shirts available for all participants – for more details or for registration forms, logon at  www.olneychamber.com  or call the Olney & Greater Richland County Chamber of Commerce office at  618-392-2241

(OLNEY)  the 21st Annual Olney Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing is set for this coming Friday at the Richland Country Club in Olney – it’s lunch at 11:30 with tee time at 1:00 – a lunch ticket only is $10 per person while the four person team fee is at $300, which includes lunch, golf carts, and the 18 holes of golf – to sign up or for details, call the Olney Chamber office tomorrow thru Friday at  618-392-2241


(OLNEY)  the Richland County Middle School will host an athletic meeting for parents, coaches, and student athletes who plan to participate in Middle School athletics during the upcoming 2017-2018 school year – the meeting is this coming Thursday evening in the RCMS Gymnasium, starting at 6:00 – coaches will also be conducting meetings for their respective sports as well – all are encouraged to attend  :  also, sports physicals for RCMS student athletes will be available on Tuesday night, August 15th, in the Middle School cafeteria, from 6:00 to 8:00 – representatives from Carle Richland Memorial Hospital and from Market Street Medical will be administering the sports physicals at a cost of $25 per student – athletes are reminded that a current physical is needed to take part in try-outs, practices, and/or games
