(OLNEY)  in spring training baseball over the weekend : the Cardinals won yesterday, but lost two games Saturday – now 12&10 in exhibition play : the Cubs won yesterday, but lost on Saturday – now 10&15 in spring training action : the White Sox lost both yesterday & Saturday – now 8&14 this spring : coming up today – the Cardinals play Washington, the Cubs play the Angels, and the White Sox play San Diego
 
(OLNEY)  in men’s college basketball – Illinois bowed out of the 2011 NCAA Tournament last night, with a 73-59 loss to Kansas in Tulsa – the Fighting Illini finish the year with an overall record of 20&14, while the Jayhawks move on to Sweet 16 action this weekend with an overall record of 34&2
 
(OLNEY)  in junior college baseball from Saturday – Olney Central College dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Heartland Community College up in Bloomington, dropping two one-run games, 2-1 and 10-9 – the top Blue Knight hitters were Andy Lasher, Derek Peterson, & Taylor Pickens – now at 19&5 on the year, OCC's non-conference schedule is over with the Blue Knights set to open their GRAC season this coming Thursday with a conference doubleheader at Southeastern Illinois, just south of Eldorado
 
(OLNEY)  in junior college softball from Saturday – Olney Central College split a conference doubleheader at Kaskaskia – while the Lady Blue Knights lost the opener, 5-1, they came back to win the nightcap, 4-3 – the OCC Ladies are now 10&6 on the year, now 3&1 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference – the Lady Blue Knights are scheduled to open at home tomorrow with a GRAC twinbill against Southeastern Illinois

(OLNEY)  in high school baseball Saturday – Olney came from behind to beat North Clay, 4-2 as the Tigers won their season & home opener – Olney’s winning pitcher was Kellen Kocher, working 3 innings in relief, allowing no runs & only one hit – at the plate, Brook Pampe had three hits & Erik Clodfelter had the game winning RBI double – for North Clay at the plate, EIU-bound Andrew Grahn had two hits, plus AJ Walters had two singles & the Cardinals' only two RBI's - the Tigers return to action tomorrow, hosting Lawrenceville at Millspaugh Field in Olney
 
(NEWTON)  in high school baseball Saturday – Newton swept a season-opening doubleheader from visiting Pana – the Eagles won, 8-4 and 19-4 – Newton’s top hitters on the day were AJ Hyatt, Austin Blair, Mark Fehrenbacher, & Peyton Wyatt – Newton’s winning pitchers were Zak Snearly & Elijah Knepper – now at 2&0 on the year, the Eagles are scheduled to return to action this Thursday at home with Altamont
 
(OLNEY)  in high school softball Saturday – Olney split a pair of games at Carmi – the Lady Tigers lost to the host Lady Bulldogs, 7-2, but came back to beat Mt Carmel in game two, 7-4 – the top Olney hitters were Elizabeth Walker, Kelsie Shipman, & Payton Young – pitchers Elizabeth Walker & Kelsie Shipman teamed up for the win – now at 1&1, the Lady Tigers are on the road tomorrow to Effingham to battle St Anthony
 
(NOBLE)  in high school softball Saturday, at the first annual Spring Freeze event in Noble – the host Lady Wildcats won one & lost two – Noble/Clay City beat Vandalia, 5-3, but then lost to Edwards County, 7-1, & lost to Hutsonville-Palestine, 7-1 – now at 3&2 on the year, the Lady Wildcats play today at Fairfield

(OLNEY)  in junior varsity baseball Saturday – Olney beat North Clay in their season opener, 11-7
 
(NEWTON)  the IHSA Boys Class 3A / 4A State Basketball Tournaments ended this weekend in Peoria :
* Class 3A : Rock Island beat Centralia for the state championship, 50-40 in double overtime
* Class 3A : Chicago Brooks beat North Chicago, 66-52 in the third place game
* Class 4A : Chicago Simeon beat Gurnee Warren for the state title, 48-39
* Class 4A : Glenbard East won the third place game over Normal Community, 57-50

(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball last night in the NCAA Tournament – Illinois beat UNLV, 73-62 as the Fighting Illini advance to a 7:30 Sunday night matchup against Kansas tomorrow night in Tulsa – the Illini enter the contest at 20&13 on the year, while the Jayhawks of Kansas come in at 33&2 overall
 
(OLNEY)  in womens junior college softball yesterday – Olney Central College swept a conference doubleheader from Lincoln Trail, 7-3 and 7-4 – the Lady Blue Knights' winning pitchers were Braddie Reed and Mackenzie Thomas, plus Samantha Tomasino had two saves – the top OCC hitters were Kourtney Crockett, Krystal Welch, Samantha Butt, & Emily Phillips – now at 9&5 on the year, 2&0 in the GRAC, the Lady Blue Knights return to conference action today at Kaskaskia with the doubleheader starting 12 noon
 
(OLNEY)  in mens junior college baseball – Olney Central College is on the road to Bloomington, to play at Heartland Community College – at 19&3 on the year, OCC was rained out yesterday at Danville
 
(NEWTON)  in high school baseball – the Newton Eagles are at home today at the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park to open their home schedule hosting Pana with a non-conference doubleheader – the first game between the Eagles & Panthers will get underway at 11:00 this morning in Newton

(OLNEY)  also in high school baseball – the Olney Tigers are scheduled for their season opener & home opener today at Bill Millspaugh Field against North Clay – however, game time has been moved from the original time of 11:00 this morning, to now 1:00 this afternoon - Olney Tiger plays should report at 11:45 this morning to Millspaugh Field  
 
(OLNEY)  in high school softball – the Olney Lady Tigers were again cancelled yesterday at Flora with the mid-afternoon rains that rolled thru the area – the Lady Tigers will now travel south to White County today with hopes of opening their season at Carmi – Olney will play the host Lady Bulldogs at 9:00 this morning, followed by a 10:30 matchup between Mt Carmel & Massac County – the losing teams will play at around 12:30 this afternoon, followed by the winning teams in the championship game at around 2:00 later today
 
(NOBLE)  back to high school softball – Noble/Clay City will host its first annual Spring Freeze at the West Richland High School in Noble – with the other teams from Vandalia, Palestine-Hutsonville, and Edwards County taking part, the first of six round robin games will get started this morning at 9:00 – there will be plenty of concessions with a $2 admission price – all are invited to Noble today
 
(NEWTON)  now to the IHSA Boys Class 3A/4A State Tournaments – here's yesterday's semi-final results :
* Class 3A : Rock Island beat Chicago Brooks, 55-36 : Centralia beat North Chicago, 59-55
* Class 4A : Chicago Simeon beat Glenbard East, 56-53 : Normal Community beat Warren,
the finals are today & tonight up in Carver Arena in Peoria - the best of luck to the Orphans from Centralia
 
(NEWTON)  the IHSA Class A and AA State Scholastic Bowls were held in Peoria's Civic Center – all of our downstate teams finished out of the top four, but competed well :
* Class A : in Pool 1 - Cumberland won it's first match over Herrin, 232-175, but the Pirates dropped their next two matches to Macomb & Rockford KCDS : in Pool 2 - Litchfield won one of its three matches
* Class A : Lisle Senior beat Macomb in the championship match : Rockford KCDS beat Petersburg for 3rd
* Class AA : in Pool 1 - Champaign Centennial was eliminated, winning one of its three matches : in Pool 2 - Carbondale was eliminated, winning one of its three matches
* Class AA : Aurora beat Rockford Auburn in the championship match : Lincolnshire beat Chicago St Ignatius for third place

(OLNEY)  in junior college baseball yesterday – OCC beat Rose Hulman, 19-4 – the winning pitcher was Drew Hillard – the top hitting Blue Knights were Taylor Pickens, Derek Peterson, & Cody Schmitt, each with three hits – now at 19&3 on the year, the Blue Knights are already cancelled for today at Danville & are scheduled for doubleheader action tomorrow at Heartland Community College, up in Bloomington
 
(NOBLE)  in high school softball yesterday – Noble/Clay City beat Odin, 7-2 – Darcie Hawkins was the winning pitcher – one of the top hitters was Katie Royse – the Lady Wildcats are now 2&0 on the year

@ Clay City : #2 Grayville beat # 7 Clay City in two games : #3 Noble beat #6 Enfield in two games : then in a semi-final match, 2nd seeded Grayville beat #3 Noble in two games
@ Jasper : #8 Allendale beat #9 St Mary's of Mt Carmel in two games : #4 New Hope beat #5 Bluford in two games : top seeded Jasper-Geff beat Allendale in two games : Jasper-Geff then won the semi-final match in two games over New Hope
@ Clay City : #1 Jasper-Geff plays #2 Grayville in the regional championship next Tuesday night at 6:00

* Class 3A : the only downstate shooter to advance to the final round tomorrow afternoon is Kevin Garber of Breese Mater Dei : two Apollo Conference players shot well but did not advance – including Effingham's Alex Carie & Mt Zion's Tim McElroy
* Class 4A : no downstate shooters advanced to the final round to be held tomorrow night

(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball – Illinois will face UNLV tonight in a Southwest Region second round game in Tulsa, Oklahoma – the Fighting Illini enter as a #9 seed with an overall record of 19&13, while the Runnin’ Rebels are a #8 seed with a season mark of 24&8 – it will be the first meeting between Coach Bruce Weber & UNLV Head Coach Lon Kruger – in fact the last game between Illinois & UNLV was when Kruger, then at Illinois, coached the Illini to a 74-69 win over UNLV in November of 2000

(OLNEY)  in jr college sports : the OCC Blue Knights at McKendree University was cancelled – the Blue Knights will play at Rose Hulman today : in softball, the OCC Lady Blue Knights were scheduled to open their GRAC season today against Lincoln Trail College in Olney, however that conference twinbill will be played tomorrow at the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park in Newton with the first game at 1:00
 
(NOBLE)  in high school softball yesterday – Noble/Clay City won its season opener, beating Webber Township, 16-0 in 5 innings – the winning pitcher was Darcie Hawkins, allowing only 3 hits & striking out 8 – at the plate for the Lady Wildcats, Katie Royse had 4 hits with 2 triples and 5 RBI, Erin Taylor & Kaylee Kuenstler each had 3 hits and 4 runs scored – Noble/Clay City plays at Odin today at 4:15
 
(NEWTON)  the Boys All Apollo Conference Basketball Team has been announced and it includes two young men from Olney & one from Newton – the list includes five seniors, four juniors, & one sophomore : Joey Miller & T.J. Bell of Charleston : Jeff Tolliver & Brandon Quandt of Salem : Jeremy Wohltman of Effingham : Dalton Temples of Paris : Michael Fehrenbacher & Brook Pampe of Olney : Peyton Wyatt of Newton : & Aaron Siler of Robinson : the All Apollo Coach of the Year was Salem's Bob Frederick in his first year as head coach of the Wildcats : those sameWildcats won the Apollo Championship with a mark of 11&3 – Charleston finished 2nd at 10&4 – Effingham, Newton, & Paris all ended up tied for 3rd place with records of 8&6 – Olney finished 6th at 6&8 – Robinson was 7th at 3&11 – Mt Zion finished 8th at 2&12

* the team selected Tyler Stuck as the Olney Tiger Most Valuable Wrestler

* the Heart of a Champion Award went to Skylar Hampton
* the Arm Wrestling Award went to Tyler Stuck

* the 32 Class 3A shooters includes four from downstate : Alex Carie of Effingham, Tim McElroy of Mt Zion, Josh Piper of Champaign Centennial, & Kevin Garber of Breese Mater Dei
* the 32 Class 4A shooters includes only one from downstate : Roy Bullock of O'Fallon
the top four shooters in each class advance to the showdown finals tomorrow & tomorrow night in Peoria
(NOBLE)  in high school softball – the Noble/Clay City Lady Wildcats will host their first annual Spring Freeze Tournament, coming up this Saturday – it's a six game round robin event featuring four teams from Noble/Clay City, Vandalia, Edwards County, & Hutsonville-Palestine – first game at 9:00 am with games to follow every 90 minutes thru evening – concessions will be available with a $2 admission per person, while children under 5 will be admitted free – all are invited to the Lady Cats fundraising tournament Saturday

(NEWTON)  the IHSA Boys Class 3A and 4A Super-Sectionals were last night :
* Class 3A @ Springfield : Centralia beat Morton, 48-44 as the Orphans advance to state this weekend
* Class 4A @ Normal : Normal Community beat Crete-Monee, 59-48
the Class 3A and 4A State Tournaments begin this Friday with semi-final action in Peoria's Carver Arena
 
(NEWTON)  it was last Friday that the Newton Lady Eagles took part in the Southern Illinois University Girls Invitational down in Carbondale – among the over 25 teams that took part were Harrisburg, Centralia, Edwardsville, Mt Vernon, Herrin, Benton, Effingham, Lawrenceville, Effingham St Anthony, & many others – the Newton Lady Eagles did well in their first event of the spring :
* Maura Cummins finished 2nd in the high jump
* Jackie Michl, Jamie Michl, Lisa Frichtl, & Carly Niebrugge finished 4th in the 3200 meter relay
* Lisa Frichtl, Jackie Michl, Maura Cummins, & Jamie Michl finished 5th in the 1600 meter relay
* Carly Niebrugge finished 9th in the 1600 meter run
* Jamie Michl finished 11th in the 400 meter dash
* Beth Helmink finished 13th in the pole vault
* Tara Wirth finished 14th in the shot put
* Sydney May finished tied for 14th in the high jump and finished 15th in the triple jump

* the Most Improved Award went to Keon Stallard
* the Trupiano Leadership Award went to Donald Totten
* the Assist Award went to Joel Eagleson

(OLNEY)  the Girls All Apollo Conference Team has been selected by its coaches : led by two Olney seniors – Taylor Stevenson & Ebany Brumfield : others include Amy Koebele of Newton, Katie Meador & Kirstie Owen of Salem, Kelsey Dirks of Robinson, Tatiana Colclasure & Sam Zerrusen of Effingham, Megan O'Dell of Charleston, and Jade Becher of Mt Zion  :  looking at the final standings for Girls in the Apollo : Olney & Salem were co-champs each with a record of 12&2 : Robinson finished 3rd at 7&6 : Effingham was 4th at 7&7 : Newton finished 5th at 6&7 : Paris was 6th at 5&9 : Mt Zion finished 7th at 4&10 : Charleston was 8th at 2&12 : both Newton & Robinson finished with only 13 games played in the Apollo due snow-outs leading up the the girls regional & the end of the basketball season

(NEWTON)  the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park annual registration for summer softball & baseball is continuing, but time is running out – go to the Park’s website at www.boysandgirlspark.org, download a signup form, & return it to P.O. Box 122 in Newton – no registrations will be accepted after April 1st

(OLNEY)  the Olney Central College baseball team will host another Little League Camp on Sunday, March 27th, from 1:00 til 4:00, that afternoon in the OCC Gym & at Conley Field – it’s a “total skills” camp with a cost of $50 per player – to pre-register or for more details, call Coach Conley at 618-395-7545

(BRIDGEPORT)  the Red Hill High School “Fellowship of Christian Athletes” has a fundraising “4 on 4” Basketball Tournament coming up on Saturday, April 16th, in the Red Hill Junior & Senior High School gyms – starting at 9:00 that morning, it’s a $50 per team entry fee with t-shirts provided for teams ages 5th grade thru adult & each team must have five members – free will donation at the gate from spectators, plus concessions and t-shirts – the signup deadline is today – call 553-6447 or the Red Hill High School
