(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball on Friday – the Cardinals beat the Reds, while both the Cubs & White Sox lost  :  on the schedule tonight – the Cardinals will again host the Reds in St. Louis  :  coming up later this afternoon – the Cubs host the LA Dodgers and the White Sox are in Detroit to battle the Tigers

(OLNEY)  most all local and area sporting events were cancelled with the storms and heavy rains

(NEWTON)  there’s a full list of doubleheaders in Apollo Conference baseball scheduled for today :
*  Robinson at Newton - has been cancelled and rescheduled for next Tuesday with first game at 4:00
*  Olney at Charleston - delayed until a 2:00 start - we'll have official word by 12 noon if they'll play or not
*  it’s Salem at Paris
*  and Mt Zion at Effingham - has been cancelled and rescheduled for next Tuesday

(OLNEY)  also a nearly full list of doubleheaders in Apollo Conference softball today :
*  Charleston at Olney - cancelled and rescheduled for next Tuesday with the first game at 3:00 

*  it’s Paris at Salem
*  and Effingham at Mt Zion

(NEWTON)  Newton Invitational Softball Tournament has been cancelled - it will not be rescheduled

(OLNEY)  get ready to hit the links – the annual SWAN Golf Outing is set for May 20th at the Richland Country Club – it's lunch at 12 noon and tee time at 1:00 with an entry fee of $260 per foursome – sign sponsors are also welcome, plus there will be a raffle of several golf items – to signup for the fundraising effort, or for more information, contact the Richland Country Club or the SWAN office in Olney

(OLNEY)  it's now a week away, when this year's Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame 2011 Inductees will be honored at Illinois State University in Normal – the banquet & recognition ceremony will be next Saturday, April 30th, in the ISU Student Center – those to be honored includes several from our regional area :
* Rick Franklin of Olney : longtime Middle School Coach & Athletic Director
* Reno Pinkston, a Noble native : longtime Coach at several schools, including Nauvoo, Warsaw, & others
* Monte Nohren : longtime & Career Coach at Stewardson-Strasburg

* Donn Hammer of Lawrenceville : a longtime Friend of Basketball

(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball on Thursday – the Cardinals, White Sox, & Reds all won – the Cubs were idle : in action tonight – Cardinals host the Reds – the White Sox are in Detroit – the Cubs play today

(OLNEY)  in junior college baseball yesterday – OCC split a conference doubleheader to Kaskaskia, winning game one, 3-2 but losing game two, 9-3 – the Blue Knights are now 35&13 overall, now at 16&8 in the GRAC – the Blue Knights’ scheduled doubleheader with Kaskaskia today in Olney is cancelled

(OLNEY)  in junior college softball yesterday – OCC lost a GRAC doubleheader to Wabash Valley, falling 1-0 and 7-0 – the Lady Blue Knights are now 32&14 overall, now 21&9 in the GRAC – the OCC Ladies are on the road to John Woods Community College in non-conference action tomorrow

(OLNEY)  in boys tennis yesterday – Olney beat Fairfield, 7-2 – the Tigers won five of the six singles’ matches played by #1 Dylan Prosser, #2 Levi Weiler, #3 Andrew Garrett, #4 Spencer Boulby, and #6 Kerry Nott – Olney won two of the three doubles’ matches with the winning pairs of #1 Blayd Beck & Jordan Atwood and #2 Austin Zwilling & Nick Kuhl – now at 5&0 on the year, still at 3&0 in the Apollo, the Tennis Tigers are at the Springfield with 15 other teams tomorrow for singles & doubles competition

(OLNEY)  in high school baseball yesterday – Olney beat Flora, 3-1 – the Tigers’ winning pitcher was Brook Pampe, allowing only three hits & striking out five – Olney’s top hitters were Donald Totten and Kellen Kocher – the Tigers improve to 15&4 and now prepare for Apollo action tomorrow at Charleston

(OLNEY)  in high school softball yesterday – Olney dropped a close one to Flora, losing 4-2 – the Lady Tigers outhit the visiting Wolfgals, 8 to 5 – Olney’s top hitters were Kelsey Shipman with two hits including a triple, Makenzie Sechrest & Payton Young each with a hit and RBI – the Lady Tigers are now 13&5 on the year and have a rescheduled game with North Knox today 3:00 with jv action to follow

(NEWTON)  in high school baseball yesterday – Newton split an Apollo doubleheader with Salem, losing game one, 6-3 but winning game two, 11-4 behind the pitching of Clayton Bailey – the top Newton hitters were Scott Jansen with five hits and one RBI, A.J. Hyatt & Taylor Kerner each with three hits, and Connor Walters with two hits and four RBI – now at 7&10 on the year, the Eagles are 1&7 in the Apollo

(NEWTON)  in high school softball yesterday – Newton split an Apollo doubleheader with Robinson, losing game one, 9-8 but winning game two, 10-4 behind the pitching of Samantha Dart – the top Lady Eagle hitters were Erica Earnest with four hits & three RBI, Megan Jansen with three hits & two RBI, and Brittney Fore with two hits & three RBI – the Lady Eagles are now at 9&8 overall, 5&5 in the Apollo

(OLNEY)  in jv baseball yesterday – Olney beat Cumberland, 13-5 – the jv Tigers are now 10&5

(OLNEY)  in girls junior high track & field from this past Tuesday – the host Lady Cubs won the delayed Olney Invitational, beating second place Flora, 142 to 77 – Mt Carmel finished third at 76, then it was Salem, Red Hill, Noble, & St Joe – here’s the top varsity finishers for the Olney Lady Cubs :
*  Marley Miller won the long jump                   
*  Keregan Coleman won the 400 meter dash 
*  Kylee Cummins, Courtney Kman, Reagan Hahn, & Marley Miller won the 400 meter relay

(OLNEY)  in boys junior high track & field Wednesday – Olney won a four-team meet, beating second place Robinson, 120 to 68 – New Hebron was third & Palestine fourth – here’s Olney’s varsity winners :
*  Luke Bettis won both the discus and the 100 meter dash                
*  Luke Hahn won the pole vault
*  Gus Lathrop won both the long jump and the 200 meter dash

(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball on Wednesday – Lance Berkman went 3 for 4 with 2 rbi’s and run scored to back five solid innings from Jaime Garcia as Cardinals edge the Nationals, 5-3 in the nightcap of a Wednesday double header, the Cardinals lost 8 -6 in the opener.  The cubs split a doubleheader with the Padres and Tampa beat the White Sox.

(NEWTON)  in high school baseball yesterday – Newton Eagles defeated Flora 9 to 8.  The Eagles scored 9 runs on 11 hits.  The Eagles were led at the plate by A. J. Hyatt, 3 for 4 with a triple, two singles, and RBI.  Mark Mammoser was 2 for 4 with two RBI’s.  The winner pitcher was Clayton Bailey.

(NEWTON)  in boys high school track & field from this past Monday’s Nick Volk Fresh/Soph Invitational – the host Eagles finished second behind winner Mattoon – Effingham was third, Robinson was fourth, the Olney Tigers were fifth, and Paris was last – here’s the list of top finishers from Newton and Olney :
*  Olney’s Dirk Washburn won the 200 meter dash with a new meet record of 23.09
*  Newton’s Brandon Tolliver Goode won the pole vault with a new meet record of 13 feet

(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball last night – the Cardinals & Cubs were rained out while the White Sox & Reds both lost : coming up today, both the Cardinals & Cubs will makeup last night’s games with separate doubleheaders in place – the White Sox and Reds will be back in action tonight as well

(OLNEY)  in high school baseball last night – Olney swept an Apollo doubleheader from Robinson, winning 7-2 and 9-8 – Olney’s winning pitchers were Michael Fehrenbacher & Kellen Kocher – the day’s top hitters for Olney were Kellen Kocher with three singles & a double, Donald Totten with two singles & a double, and Erik Clodfelter with a single & double – now at 14&4 on the year, the Tigers improve to 6&2 in the Apollo Conference standings – Olney’s scheduled to host Flora at Millspaugh Field tomorrow

(NEWTON)  all other conference doubleheaders in baseball were cancelled today & rescheduled : it’s Paris at Effingham today : Salem at Newton tomorrow starting at 4:00 : Mt Zion at Charleston on May 11th

(NEWTON)  in high school softball yesterday – Newton swept a conference doubleheader from Salem, winning 7-2 and 6-3 – the Lady Eagles’ winning pitchers were Keidrah Hardiek allowing one earned run & striking out eleven, plus Samantha Dart allowing two earned runs & striking out two – Newton’s top hitters were Nicole Schackmann with a single & double and Mallory Kocher with two doubles in game one, then Megan Jansen with three singles and Brittany Fore with a single, double, & triple in game two – now at 8&7 on the year, the Lady Eagles improve to 4&4 in the Apollo – they play at Robinson tomorrow at 3:00

(OLNEY)  the other Apollo doubleheaders in softball were cancelled and have yet to be rescheduled – that includes Charleston at Mt Zion and Effingham at Paris – Olney played at Robinson last Thursday

(OLNEY)  in junior college sports – the OCC Blue Knights were rained out at Rend Lake – no makeup date as of yet – the Lady Blue Knights are cancelled for today against Millikin University

(NEWTON)  in girls high school track & field from Tuesday’s rescheduled San Bennett Invitational at Robinson – Newton came away with another championship with a 23 point victory over second place Teutopolis, 93 to 70 – host Robinson was third, with Neoga fourth & Olney fifth – rounding out the top ten teams were Paris, Red Hill, Cowden-Herrick, Marshall, & Oblong – then Cumberland, Lawrenceville, St Anthony, & St Elmo – here’s the top results involving athletes from Newton, Olney, & Oblong :
*  Newton’s Maura Cummins won the high jump with a new meet record of  5 feet 6 inches
*  Olney’s Ebany Brumfield won the 100 meter dash

(NOBLE)  in high school softball yesterday – Noble / Clay City lost to Wayne City, 3-0 although the Lady Wildcats outhit Wayne City – the top NCC hitters were Katie Royse and Magan Troyer, each with a triple – now at 7&8 on the year, the Lady Wildcats are scheduled to play at Dieterich this afternoon

(OLNEY)  in high school softball – the Cumberland at Olney game was cancelled as Cumberland failed to put the contracted game on their schedule – therefore, no game was played – Olney plays Thursday at home

(OLNEY)  in junior varsity baseball yesterday – Olney shutout Mt Carmel, 10-0 in five innings – in fact Alex Craig threw a no-hitter in his four innings of work – the jv Tigers are now 9&5 on the year
 
(OLNEY)  in Fighting Illini Football news – practice #11 was held this past Saturday morning and with one week of spring ball remaining, practice resumes this morning in Champaign as the Illini prepare for their annual Orange & Blue Spring Game this Saturday at Memorial Stadium with a 1:00 start – while the game and parking is free to the public, up to 300 former Illini players, coaches, & staff will return to campus for the Varsity "I" Association's annual Football BBQ Bash Weekend – before the game, plenty of games & fun for all ages, especially children & their families – all in Champaign this Saturday
