(OLNEY)  in college football yesterday at the Texas Bowl down in Houston – Illinois beat Baylor, 38-14 as the Fighting Illini finish the season with a record of 7&6, just over .500 – the Illini wrapped up their Big Ten schedule with a record of 4&4, in a three way tie with Iowa & Penn State for fourth place – the league’s top three teams, all at 7&1, included Ohio State & Michigan State behind Conference Champs Wisconsin

(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball last night – Illinois opened their Big Ten season with a road win at Iowa, beating the Hawkeyes, 87-77 – improving to 11&3 on the year, now 1&0 in the Big Ten, the Illini return to league action this coming Sunday afternoon, hosting Wisconsin with a 5:00 tip in Champaign

(OLNEY)  in girls hoops up at the Mattoon Christmas Holiday Tournament – Olney avenged a first round loss to Salem by last night beating the Lady Wildcats, 47-36, to repeat as Tournament Champions – in the other games : Cumberland beat Mattoon for 3rd place, 54-42 : St Anthony beat Mahomet-Seymour for 5th place, 44-34 : Vandalia beat Decatur MacArthur for 7th place, 52-40 : despite Olney’s championship, Salem’s Katie Meador was the Tournament MVP – other selections included Olney’s Taylor Stevenson & Ebany Brumfield, Salem’s Kirstie Owen, Cumberland’s Kennedy Gabel, & St Anthony’s Kelly McHugh

(NEWTON)  in boys high school basketball last night at the Dieterich Holiday Tournament – Newton wins another championship with a tough 49-46 victory over Red Hill – with the win, the Eagles improve to 10&1 on the year – in yesterday’s other games : Oblong beat Beecher City, 66-63 in the 3rd place game : North Clay beat Dieterich for 5th place, 34-27 : Cowden-Herrick beat Arcola for 7th place, 61-57 : Newton’s Peyton Wyatt was selected as the Boys Tournament’s MVP – teammate Dylan Davidson of Newton was also selected to the All-Tournament Team – also Oblong’s Sean Morecraft & Anthony Johnson, Red Hill’s Robert Young & Cameron Lewis, Dieterich’s Nathan Garbe, & North Clay’s Andrew Grahn

(NEWTON)  in girls high school basketball last night at the Dieterich Holiday Tournament – Newton lost the championship to top-seeded Cowden-Herrick / Beecher City, 67-52 – in the other games : Dieterich beat North Clay for 3rd place, 50-36 : Arcola beat Casey-Westfield for 5th place, 43-33 : South Central beat Oblong for 7th place, 51-24 : Newton’s Amy Koebele & Tara Flowers were both selected to the All-Tournament Team, along with MVP Micah Jones of CHBC, plus teammates Faith Wendte & Bailey Doty – also Dieterich’s Brittney Niemerg & Candace Niemerg, and North Clay’s Andrea Buhrmann

(OLNEY)  in boys hoops down at the Duster Thomas Hoops Classic in Pinckneyville – Olney lost last night’s championship game to the host Panthers, 57-34 as the Tigers played in their fourth straight title game – in the other games : Du Quoin won the 3rd place game over Metro-East Lutheran, 70-28 : Benton beat Lawrenceville in the 5th place game, 61-37 : Steeleville beat Red Bud in the 7th place game, 58-50 : Olney’s Michael Fehrenbacher & Brook Pampe were selected to the All-Tournament Team

(OLNEY)  in girls hoops up at the Mattoon Christmas Holiday Tournament – Olney won two games as the Lady Tigers advance to tonight’s title game – yesterday’s wins had Olney over Mahomet-Seymour, 66-25, and beating Mattoon, 49-48 – it will be a re-match of Apollo teams in tonight’s championship game at 7:30 as the Lady Tigers will play Salem, who beat Olney in the tournament’s first game Monday morning : in today’s first game at 3:00, Vandalia plays Decatur MacArthur for 7th place : it’s St Anthony & Mahomet at 4:30 for 5th place : in the 3rd place game tonight at 6:00, Cumberland plays the host Green Wave

(NEWTON)  in boys high school basketball yesterday at the Dieterich Holiday Tournament – Newton beat Beecher City, 59-31 as the Eagles advance to tonight’s championship game – the 8:00 matchup has the top seeded Eagles going up against Red Hill as the Salukis won the other semi-final game last night, beating Oblong, 59-38 – in the other games yesterday, Dieterich beat Arcola & North Clay beat Cowden-Herrick – the final games are today, starting with the 7th place game at 1:00 this afternoon between Cowden-Herrick & Arcola : the host Movin’ Maroons play North Clay in the 5th place game at 2:30 : the 3rd place matchup has Beecher City against Oblong at 4:00 this afternoon : then Newton’s title game at around 8:00 later tonight

(OLNEY)  in college football & basketball – our two Fighting Illini teams are in action far from each other on this Wednesday evening – while Coach Ron Zook & the Football Illini finish up their season at the Texas Bowl in Houston, Coach Bruce Weber & the Basketball Illini will open up their Big Ten schedule on the road in Iowa City – the 10&3 Illini will battle the Hawkeyes, who come in with a record of 7&5

(OLNEY)  in girls hoops up at the Mattoon Christmas Holiday Tournament – Olney split the first two games, losing the opener to Salem, 57-46, but returning with a win over Decatur MacArthur, 60-27 – the Lady Tigers have their final pool-play game this morning at 10:00 against Mahomet-Seymour – then it’s cross pool-play this evening, followed by the final four games set for tomorrow afternoon & evening

(NEWTON)  in boys high school basketball yesterday at the Dieterich Holiday Tournament – Newton beat Cowden-Herrick, 66-47 as the Eagles hold true to their #1 seed – Newton moves into a 5:00 semi-final game today against Beecher City who beat North Clay, 58-57 – tonight’s other semi-final matchup at 7:00 has Oblong against Red Hill, as the Panthers beat the host Movin’ Maroons in overtime, 79-74, and the Salukis beat Arcola, 58-37 – the tournament continues with four more games today from 2:00 to 9:00

(BRIDGEPORT)  in girls action at the Red Hill Holiday Tournament – Noble / Clay City lost to host Red Hill, while Union High out of Dugger, Indiana beat Lawrenceville – the tournament ends tonight with the 3rd place game at 6:00 and the championship to follow at around 7:30 at Red Hill High in Bridgeport

* the Olney Lady Tigers will be at the Mattoon Christmas Tournament today thru Wednesday, with their first game this morning at 8:30, then again this afternoon at 3:00
* the Newton Lady Eagles are at the Dieterich Holiday Tournament today thru Wednesday, with their first game at 10:00 this morning, then again this afternoon at 1:00
* the Olney Tigers will be at the Duster Thomas Hoops Classic today & tomorrow in Pinckneyville, with the first game this afternoon at 1:00, followed by another contest this evening at 5:30
* the Newton Eagles are at the Dieterich Holiday Tournament Monday today thru Wednesday, with their first game at 2:00 this afternoon, then again tomorrow at either 2:00 or 5:00
* the Noble / Clay City Lady Wildcats will be at the Red Hill Tournament tonight & tomorrow night, with their first game this evening at 7:30, then again tomorrow night at either 6:00 or 7:30
