(OLNEY)  in junior college basketball last night in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference – the OCC teams dropped a conference doubleheader to Wabash Valley College at “The Dungeon” :
* Wabash beat the Blue Knights, 95-81, as OCC falls to 5&2 in the GRAC, now 14&6 overall – top OCC scorers were Ason Hacker (19), Austin Akers (15), & Jordan Mitchell (15) – at Southeastern Saturday
* Wabash beat the Lady Blue Knights, 83-59, as OCC is now 3&4 in the GRAC, now 7&11 overall – the top OCC scorers were Tara Wornica (18), Alyssa Like (13), & Jessica Zavoral (12)
* elsewhere in the GRAC last night for men : Lake Land beat Rend Lake, 82-69 : Southwestern Illinois beat Lincoln Trail, 77-74 : John A Logan beat Southeastern Illinois, 91-85

(NEWTON)  in boys junior high basketball last night, area IESA 7th Grade Regionals continued :
* Class 1A @ Effingham : Dieterich beat St Anthony, 29-28 for the regional championship 
* Class 1A @ Chrisman : Palestine beat Chrisman-Scottland, 32-31 for the regional champsionship
* Class 2A @ Altamont : Beecher City beat Altamont, 46-42 for the regional championship
* Class 3A @ Shelbyville : Teutopolis plays Cumberland for the regional title tonight 
* Class 3A @ Paris : Lawrenceville Parkview plays Robinson Nutall plays for the regional title tonight 

(OLNEY)  in boys high school wrestling this week – Olney beat Carmi, 41-36 as the Tigers won eight of the fourteen matches – Olney improves to 14&8 on the year – the individual winners for Olney included :

(OLNEY)  meanwhile, the Olney Cubs Wrestling Club competed this past Sunday down in Mt Vernon – among the eighteen wrestlers from Olney, the following were the top finishers in their respective classes :
* Kyle Beasley & Dalyn Brach each finished 2nd       * Kyle West had a 3rd place finish
* Laine Slover was 4th      * Timothy Strum, Michael Williams, & Joe Burkett all had 5th place finishes
the Wrestling Cubs will compete again this coming Sunday in Effingham
 
(NEWTON)  the Apollo Girls Fresh/Soph Basketball Tournament will begin this Saturday with first and second round action at two locations – here's the 10:00 quarter-final matchups :
*  Mt Zion & Robinson at the Mt Zion High School : Charleston & Paris at the Mt Zion Middle School
*  Olney & Effingham at the High School in Olney : Newton & Salem at the Elementary School in Olney
*  the winners & losers will then play in semi-final action at 12 noon at the respective sites
*  the finals will be played a week from Saturday on February 5th at the Charleston High School
 
(EFFINGHAM)  downstate Special Olympic athletes will compete in the District H Basketball Tournament this Sunday at St Anthony's High School in Effingham – a total of 18 teams for ages 16 & over with those winning gold medals eligible to advance to the Special Olympic State Tournament in Normal in March – the games this Sunday will run from 8:00 in the morning until 7:00 at night and volunteers are needed – if your group or church would like to help out, call the Area 9 Office at 217-345-2424 or go to www.soill.org
 
(OLNEY)  the downstate regionals start this week & the Region 16 Tournament is at the St Joe School :

(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball tonight – Illinois tries to rebound from a tough 5-point loss to the country's number one team last Saturday – the 14&6 Fighing Illini are in Bloomington, Indiana to take on the 10&10 Hoosiers – while the Illini are 4&3, tied for 5th in the Big Ten, Indiana is at 1&6, tied for 9th

(OLNEY)  it was an Apollo Conference makeup Mega-Night in boys & girls high school basketball last night as the Olney teams took three out of four games from the Paris teams :
*  in girls action – Olney won the varsity game over Paris, 53-35 as the ERHS Lady Tigers were led by three players in double figures – Taylor Stevenson had 19 points – Ebany Brumfield & Heather Ernst each had 10 points apiece – the Lady Tigers improve to 18&7 on the year, now 9&2 in the Apollo – the Lady Tigers have three conference games remaining with a league-leading matchup with Salem tomorrow night
*  in boys play – Olney won the varsity game over Paris, 56-41 as the ERHS Tigers were led by Brook Pampe’s 22 points, plus 19 points from Michael Fehrenbacher – Olney improves to 16&5 overall, now 4&2 in the Apollo – the Tigers will host Salem Friday night, then host Newton Saturday afternoon in a makeup
*  in boys junior varsity action – Olney beat Paris, 43-41
*  in girls junior varsity play – Paris beat Olney, 48-44 despite a late comeback by the host Lady Tigers

(OLNEY)  in another makeup Apollo game last night – Salem took care of Effingham, 72-59 as the Wildcats improve to 6&1 in the Apollo, now 10&10 overall – Effingham drops to 4&3 in the Apollo

(OLNEY)  also in girls high school hoops last night, in the Apollo – Olney took two from Charleston : the Lady Tigers won the varsity game, 65-39, led by Taylor Stevenson’s 30 points, while Heather Ernst added 14 points – Olney improves to 18&5 on the year, now 8&2 in the league : Olney also won the junior varsity game, 50-24 : the Lady Tigers are back in play tonight, in rescheduled action hosting Paris in Ron Herrin Gym – it’s junior varsity action at 5:00, followed by varsity Lady Tiger action at 6:30 at the high school

(OLNEY)  in boys junior high basketball last night – Olney took two from North Clay : the Cubs won the 8th grade game, 55-26, led by Tate Nohren’s 15 points – the Olney varsity is now 15&3 on the year : Olney also won the 7th grade game, 30-24 : the Cubs play again tomorrow night at Mt Carmel : by the way, the 7th grade squad lost a close one in the NEC Tournament this past Saturday, falling to Salem, 50-47

(OLNEY)  also in boys junior high hoops – St Joe finished second in the Belleville Diocesan Tournament held this past weekend : the 2nd-seeded Wildcats beat St Ann of Nashville Friday night : then won their semi-final game Saturday over St Andrews of Murphysboro : St Joe lost to top-seeded St James of Millstadt in the title game Sunday : now at 16&4 on the year, St Joe will host the Class S Regional starting Thursday
 
(OLNEY)  it’s a couple of rescheduled Apollo Conference games tonight in Olney as the Lady Tigers & Tigers will host Paris in a Mega-Night event in Ron Herrin Gym – the junior varsity boys will play at the Elementary School at 5:00 while the Tiger varsity plays at 8:00 after the two girls games at the high school – the jv action at the Elementary School will be followed by rescheduled fresh/soph action at around 6:15

(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball Saturday – Illinois lost to the nation's top team from Ohio State, 73-68 despite the Fighting Illini leading by one point at halftime – while the Buckeyes remain undefeated at 20&0 overall, now 7&0 in the Big Ten, the Illini drop to 14&6 on the year, now 4&3 in the league – the Illini are on the road to Bloomington for a Thursday night matchup with the Hoosiers in Indiana
 
(OLNEY)  in junior college basketball Saturday - the OCC teams swept a conference doubleheader from Lincoln Trail College during the Coaches versus Cancer "Pack the Place Pink" night at "The Dungeon"
*  the OCC Blue Knights beat Lincoln Trail, 86-75, led by Austin Akers & Chase Brinkley, each with 16 points – the Blue Knights are 14&5 on the year, now 5&1 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
*  the OCC Lady Blue Knights beat Lincoln Trail, 101-76, led by Tara Worrica & Alicia Tally with 24 & 22 points respectively – the Lady Blue Knights have now won three in a row, now 3&3 in the GRAC and 7&10 overall – the OCC teams will host Wabash Valley this Wednesday in "The Dungeon"

*  Dakota Thompson was named to the All Apollo 1st Team after winning the 119 pound class title at 4&0
*  Tyler Stuck & Tanner Wingert were both named to the All Apollo 2nd Team – both finished second, winning three of their four matches in the 152 pound class and 189 pound class, respectively
*  three Olney wrestlers were 2&2 on the day – Colton Carmody, Greg Smith, and Mitch Harmon

(OLNEY)  in boys high school basketball from Saturday – the Olney Tigers lost their final game at the Carmi / White County Invitational Tournament, but won a share of the title – the Tigers lost in double overtime to Harrisburg, 56-54 – while Harrisburg finished third with a 3&2 record, both Olney & Mt Vernon, Indiana were 4&1, sharing the co-championship, although the Tigers beat Mt Vernon in the head-to-head matchup last Tuesday night : Olney's Michael Fehrenbacher was selected as the Tournament's MVP – others chosen to the All-Tournament Team included Olney's Brook Pampe, Fairfield's Tyler Hutchinson, Harrisburg's Capel Henshaw, Mt Vernon's Jacob Steinhart, & Mt Carmel's Shawn Bumpus : now at 15&5 on the year, the Tigers return to Apollo action tomorrow night, hosting Paris in Ron Herrin Gym

(OLNEY)  in boys high school basketball last night at the Carmi / White County Invitational – Olney beat Mt Carmel, 49-42 to improve to 3&0 in the tournament, now 14&4 on the year – the Tigers were led in scoring by Michael Fehrenbacher & Brook Pampe, each with 15 points : in last night’s other games – Mt Vernon, Indiana held off Fairfield, 59-55, and Harrisburg beat the host Bulldogs, 77-45 : the tournament continues with three more games at 10:30, 12 noon, and 1:30 today, followed by the final three games later tonight at 5:30, 7:00, and 8:30 – the Tigers play the final game in each session at 1:30 and 8:30

(NEWTON)  also in boys basketball last night, in non-conference play – Newton split a pair of games with Casey-Westfield : the visiting Warriors won the varsity game, 66-45 as the Eagles drop to an overall record of 11&4 – Peyton Wyatt led Newton with 24 points while Dylan Davidson added 6 points : Newton won the jv game, 51-48 : the Newton Eagles return to action next Friday in Apollo play hosting Paris at NCHS

(OLNEY)  in girls high school basketball last night – Olney was eliminated from the Highland Tournament with a 5th place semi-final game loss to Breese Central, 63-39 – the Lady Tigers fall to 17&5 on the year – Breese Central moves into today’s 5th place game against Belleville West who last night eliminated Salem, 57-45 – in the championship bracket semi-final last night, host Highland slipped by Nashville, 33-32 – the tournament’s final four games are today with the host Lady Bulldogs against Edwardsville in the title game
 
(OLNEY)  in boys high school basketball last night in the Midland Trail Conference Tournament – Wayne City beat Odin, 37-36 and Woodlawn beat Sandoval, 69-36 in the semi-finals – the Tournament will finish up this afternoon and tonight with all the final games at North Clay High School in Louisville

(OLNEY)  in girls junior high basketball – best of luck to the Olney Lady Cubs as they travel to the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association’s Class “L” State Tournament today down at Rend Lake College – it’s a 10:45 matchup with Olney against Carlyle – the Lady Cubs enter with a record of 14&2, with one of the two losses to Carlyle earlier this year at the Lady Bobcat Tournament in Salem – the tournament continues with semi-final action next Tuesday and the finals set for a week from today
