(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball yesterday – the Cardinals won again on the west coast
* the Redbirds blanked the Padres in San Diego, 2-0

* those that lost were the Cubs, Brewers, White Sox, Tigers, Twins, and Braves

(NEWTON)  in High School Football from last Friday night – Newton won its LIC opener on the road
the Eagles beat Casey-Westfield in Little Illini Conference action, 49-14 and here’s a look at the stats
Newton jumped out to a 28-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter with four touchdowns and extra points
* a 9 yard TD run by Peyton Doughty with a Ben Carr extra point kick
* a 57 yard TD pass from Connor Bierman to Rhett Kocher with a Ben Carr extra point kick
* a 4 yard TD run by Peyton Doughty with a Ben Carr extra point kick
* 9 yard TD run by Connor Brown with a Ben Carr extra point kick
the Eagles then added a lone touchdown in the 2nd quarter extending the lead to 35-0 at halftime
* a 1 yard TD run by Connor Bierman with a Ben Carr extra point kick
Newton added another touchdown in the 3rd quarter as the host Warriors also scored for a 42-7 score

Olney scored twice in the 2nd quarter despite Red Hill’s four TD’s and a 45-14 halftime lead

* the Fighting Illini beat Ball State, 24-21 – Illinois will host Western Kentucky Saturday night
* the SIU Salukis will open their season this Saturday night at home against Mississippi Valley State
* the 1-0 EIU Panthers are on the road Saturday afternoon up to DeKalb to play Northern Illinois

the Tigers won their varsity match over Altamont, 3-1

Olney finished the day with two out of five match wins, ending up in 6th place among the twelve teams
* the Lady Tigers had wins over Monticello and Fairfield
* Olney, however lost to Tolono Unity, Mt. Zion, and Newton
* Olney’s top players on the day were Faith Stallard, Addie Hemrich, Colleen Inyart, and Brittany Black
by the way, Mt. Zion won the Tournament while Edwards County finished in 2nd place
* Edwards County beat Monticello, Teutopolis, Newton, and Hartsburg-Emden before losing to Mt. Zion

the Tigers beat Effingham St. Anthony in the varsity match, 2-1
* Olney’s goals were scored by Jadon Burckhart and Jacob McVicker with a Kye Stallard assist
* Olney had great defensive play by Seth Ingram and Trey Nosek – Reid Snyder played a strong midfield
St. Anthony won the junior varsity match, 3-0
the Soccer Tigers are quickly back in action tomorrow as they travel to Altamont

 

(NEWTON)  also in Boys High School Soccer yesterday – Newton won a home match in Jasper County
the Eagles blanked Altamont, 7-0
* Nacho Moragues and Giuseppe Cucinella led Newton by scoring two goals each
* Ben Carr, Jack Chapman, and Greg Shinn all scored a single goal apiece
* with two assists each were Jack Chapman and Ben Carr
* Nacho Moragues and Sean Brody each had a single assist apiece
the Soccer Eagles are quickly back in action tomorrow when they’ll host Charleston

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Volleyball last night – Olney had a clean three match sweep on the road
the Lady Tigers won the varsity match over Mt. Carmel in three sets, 21-25, 25-17, 25-10
* Olney was led by Addie Hemrich, Faith Stallard, Emi Rose, Raegan Hires, and Taylor Ferguson
Olney also won the junior varsity match in three sets and won the fresh/soph match in two sets
the Lady Tigers are back on the court tomorrow at the Casey-Westfield Classic Tournament

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Tennis yesterday – it was Newton slipping by Olney
the visiting Lady Eagles beat the Lady Tigers, 5 to 4
here’s the singles results, in which Newton took four of the six matches
* Newton’s Jacelyn Street won the #1 singles match in two sets, 6-1, 6-4
* Newton’s Sydney Zumbahlen won the #2 singles match in two sets, 6-0, 6-1
* Newton’s Lesley Woods won the #3 singles match in two sets, 6-4, 6-3
* Olney’s Riley Doll won the #4 singles match in three sets, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5
* Newton’s Keri Zumbahlen won the #5 singles match in three sets, 6-7, 7-5, 6-1
* Olney’s Katie Hostetter won the #6 singles match in two sets, 6-3, 6-1
in the doubles competition, the host Lady Tigers won two of the three matches
* Olney’s Logan Kauble and Haven Doll won the #1 doubles match in two sets, 7-5, 6-1
* Newton’s Jacelyn Street and Allison Harris won the #2 doubles match in two sets, 6-1, 6-1
* Olney’s Zoe Alexander and Riley Doll won the #3 doubles match in two sets, 6-0, 6-1
Olney won all eleven of the junior varsity matches
while Newton plays at the Salem Tournament tomorrow, Olney will travel to Flora next Thursday

the Tigers beat host Lawrenceville, 31 to 36 while Palestine-Hutsonville was 3rd with 67 points
* Lawrenceville’s Jack Holdren won the 3 mile race while Pal-Hut’s Negus Bogard finished 2nd
* Olney’s top runners were Caleb Thomas and Owen Powell as the teammates finished 3rd and 4th
* Olney’s Gavin Kirby was 6th, Tyler Hughes was 8th, and Felix Pajonk finished 10th
* three other Tigers finished 12th, 13th, and 14th – Jordan Belcher, Collin Gilreath, and Barak Berger
the Tigers are back on the OCC course next Tuesday when they host Robinson and Paris

it was host Lawrenceville edging out 2nd place Olney, 24 to 34 – Palestine-Hutsonville was 3rd
* Olney’s Cameron Hough won the 3 mile race, over a minute better than Lawrenceville’s Katie Moore
* Olney’s Danni Murphy was 3rd followed by five Lawrenceville runners finishing 4th thru 8th
* Olney’s Gracie Julian was 9th, Abby Rauch was 10th, Lydia Allen was 11th, and Hallie Troester was 12th
the Lady Tigers are back on the OCC course next Tuesday when they host Paris and Robinson

Cumberland slipped by the Lady Eagles, 23 to 32 on the Sam Parr State Park course
* Cumberland’s Jasmyn Dittamore won the race
* Newton’s top runner was Abby Stone finishing in 2nd place
* Cumberland’s Vic Ault and Eve Brown were 3rd and 4th
* Newton’s Caroline Short and Sydney Rudolphi finished 5th and 6th
* also in the top ten for Newton were Mya Kuhn (9th) and Cora Buerster (10th)
the Lady Eagles are back on the course next Tuesday when they travel to Teutopolis

Cumberland won the two team meet, 15 to 44
* Cumberland’s Kort McClellan won the race, followed by teammate Blake Sutherland in 2nd place
* Cumberland’s Rayce Zike, Michael Carpenter, and Ryky Brown finished 3rd, 4th, and 5th
* Newton’s top runner was Tucker Rieman who finished in 6th place overall
* Newton’s Crayton Chesnut and Bob Rauch were 7th and 8th respectively

* the Redbirds fell short to the Brewers, 6-5

* those that won were the Cubs, Twins, Tigers, and Rangers
* those that lost were the Pirates, Reds, White Sox, and Astros
* both the Indians and Braves won two games each by sweeping their respective day/night doubleheaders

Lawrenceville / Red Hill beat the Tigers on the front nine, 168-186
* the Match Medalists was Lawrenceville / Red Hill’s Garret Hulfaucher with a low round 37
* Olney’s best round was Coen McDowell’s round of 40
* Olney’s Zach Duenas shot a 47, followed by Ryan Tolliver’s 48
* Olney’s Logan Muston and Ethan Rodgers each shot a 51
Oblong had three golfers, not enough for a team score
