(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball on Thursday – the Cardinals & White Sox both lost, while the Cubs beat the Brewers – the Reds were idle  :  coming up tonight – the Cardinals return home to host Kansas City in the first of three against the Royals this Father’s Day weekend – the White Sox are in Arizona – the Reds will host the Blue Jays – and in an afternoon game today, the Cubs will host the Mets at Wrigley Field
 
(OLNEY)  in the Richland County Softball League last night – the League’s defending season champions from last summer won their first two games of this scheduled season – The Outlaws took two from Team Freedom, winning 18-5 and 21-0 – with a night off tonight, the League resumes with another doubleheader Monday night at 6:00, at the Musgrove Park Ball Diamond – the matchup there has Highway 2 / Newby’s up against Friday Night Lights – all spectators are welcome, but bring your own chairs & concessions
 
(OLNEY)  in auto racing news – defending AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Champion Levi Jones will lead the series to its annual “Indiana Sprint Week” events in July following the Olney native’s second consecutive championship in the recent “Eastern Storm” series a week ago – Jones continues to lead the AMSOIL National standings in search of a record fifth series crown – the “Indiana Sprint Week” begins with the first of seven races at the I-69 Speedway in Gas City on July 8th, three weeks from tonight
 
(NEWTON)  the IHSA Bass Fishing Tournament is today & tomorrow on Carlyle Lake, over in Clinton County, with 55 boats taking part – among those that qualified out of the 19 statewide sectionals from back in April were several from the downstate area – they include teams from Effingham St Anthony, Teutopolis, South Central, Marion, Highland, Goreville, & Carlyle – the second & final round of fishing is tomorrow

(NEWTON)  the Sunrise Youth Center “Soccer Signup” continues thru August 1st for Jasper County K-8 grade children – the cost is at $25 per child or $50 for a family of three or more siblings – registration forms are available in the Sunrise Youth Center & Community Building main lobby during regular lobby hours

(OLNEY)  the next OCC baseball camp for youth ages 6 to 13 will be a “hitting camp” next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, each morning from 9:00 until 11:00, at OCC’s Conley Field – each player should bring their own bat and the cost is at $50 per player – call Coach Conley to signup at 618-395-7545

(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball from Wednesday – the Cardinals, Cubs, & White Sox all lost, while the Reds won  :  coming up tonight – the Cardinals finish up in Washington, D.C.  :  later this afternoon – the Cubs host the Brewers & the White Sox are back in Minnesota – the Reds are idle until tomorrow night
 
(OLNEY)  the Richland County Softball League had last night’s doubleheader cancelled, but will return to scheduled action tonight – the 6:00 doubleheader has “Team Freedom” up against The Outlaws, all at the Musgrove Park Ball Diamond – spectators are welcomed, but should bring their own chairs & concessions – after tonight, the League resumes with more twinbill action next Monday night, again starting at 6:00
 
(NEWTON)  the Apollo Conference has announced the 2010-2011 All Sports Championship results :
*  Effingham won the “All Sports” Title with a total of 94 points – Effingham won three conference crowns in girls tennis, volleyball, and girls track
*  Mt Zion finished second place with 83.5 points – Mt Zion won five Apollo titles in boys cross country, girls cross country, football, wrestling, and softball – Mt Zion shared the conference title in boys soccer
*  Charleston was third with 81 points – Charleston had two conference crowns in baseball and girls golf
*  Salem was fourth with 79 points – Salem won two Apollo titles in boys basketball and boys golf
*  Olney was fifth with 63 points – Olney won the conference crown in boys tennis & shared the Apollo title in girls basketball
*  Robinson was sixth with 60 points and no conference titles
*  Newton was seventh with 52 points – Newton won the Apollo crown in boys track, was 2nd in girls track
*  and Paris was eighth with 42.5 points and no conference titles
the final season of Apollo Conference sports, as we know it, will begin in August – a year from now, teams from Newton, Olney, & Robinson will be preparing for their first season in the Little Illini Conference
 
(OLNEY)  the Walmart BFL Illini Division Fishing Tournament was last Saturday down on Rend Lake :
* Toby Corn of West Frankfort won the five bass weight total with 14 pounds, 7 ounces – collecting $3,164
* John Wright of Shelbyville was a very close 2nd with 14 pounds, 5 ounces – he won $1,582
* meanwhile, Donald Oksanen of Chicago won the Co-Angler Division, collecting $1,578
* Obadiah Holsapple of Greenup was 2nd – bringing home $789
the next BFL Illini Division Tournament will be July 9th on the Mississippi River in Madison, Iowa

(OLNEY)  it was summer swimming competition yesterday at the Musgrove Aquatic Center in Olney – the host Tigersharks won the three team event, beating the second place Brittlebank Swim Team from Mt. Vernon, Indiana, 504 to 293 – finishing third was the McLeansboro Sea Otters from down in Hamilton County, with 189 points – Olney’s next swim meet is this Saturday at the Carmi Swim Invitational

Dodgers – both the Cardinals & White Sox were idle yesterday & last night  :  coming up tonight – the Cardinals start a three game series in Washington, D.C. against the Nationals – the Cubs again will host Milwaukee – the White Sox are in Minnesota – the Reds are back in Los Angeles against the Dodgers
 
(OLNEY)  in the opening night of the Richland County Softball League last night – Brown’s Furniture won a league doubleheader by beating Highway 2 / Newby’s, 18-0 and 13-1 – the League continues with another doubleheader tonight, weather permitting, with Team Freedom taking on Thomas Factory Outlet – all games are played at the Musgrove Park Softball Diamond, just south of the Musgrove Aquatic Center – with seven teams taking part, it’s league doubleheaders each night at 6:00 on Monday’s, Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s, & Thursday’s – all spectators are welcome, but bring your own lawn chairs & snacks

* in Class 3A  :  Marengo won the 3A State Championship with a 1-0 shutout over LaSalle-Peru
* in Class 3A  :  Glen Ellyn won the 3A third place game over Bethalto Civic Memorial, 8-4
* in Class 4A  :  Moline won the 4a State Championship with a 9-8 victory over St Charles North
* in Class 4A  :  Lisle Benet Academy won the 4A third place game over Winnetka New Trier, 7-4

* in Class 3A  :  Maple Park Kaneland won the 3A State Championship with an 11-3 win over Oak Forest

* in Class 4A  :  LaGrange Lyons won the 4A State Title over New Lenox Providence Catholic, 8-3
* in Class 4A  :  Mt Prospect won the 4A third place game with a 2-1 victory over Chicago Mt Carmel
 
(FLORA)  in area dirt track racing from Saturday night at the Clay County Speedway, just north of Flora :
* in the Sprints  :  Korey Weyant took the checkered flag, followed by Kyle Chady & Mitch Wissmiller
* in the Modifieds  :  Ed Shamhart finished in first place, followed by Michael Bolyard & Kelby Simmons

(NEWTON)  the Illinois High School Association will hold its third Bass Fishing State Finals this coming weekend at Carlyle Lake – originally set for the first weekend of May, the event was postponed due to the record-setting rains & flooding in Southern Illinois this past spring – a total of 55 boats from the 19 sectionals will take part in the event which begins each morning this Friday & Saturday, June 17th & 18th
