LOCAL / AREA SPORTS   --   FRIDAY   --   11/17/17

 

(NEWTON) in Girls High School Basketball- the Newton Lady Eagles traveled to Robinson in a non-conference game beating the Lady Maroons 43-16, Abby Frohning led the Lady Eagles with 17 points.

Newton also won the JV game 46-18. The Lady Eagles will host the Bob Kerans Tournament next week and open up with Vandalia at 7pm on Monday Night.

 

(OLNEY) in Girls Jr. High Basketball, Olney split a pair of games, the Lady Cubs won the 8th grade game 37-32 over Paris Mayo in Centralia, Anna Blank with 16 points. Paris Mayo won the 7th grade game 39-22.

 

(NEWTON) in Boys Jr. High Basketball, Jasper County lost two at home, the Jr. Eagles lost the 8th game to T-town 36-11, T-town won the 7th grade game 43-18, the Jasper County Jr. Eagles will play at Casey-Westfield on Monday.

 

(NEWTON) also in Boys Jr. High Basketball, St. Thomas won two, in the 8th grade game St. Thomas beat St. Peter 49-20 and St. Thomas won the 7th grade game 35-17.

 

(NEWTON) in Boys High School Basketball – the Cumberland Turkey Tournament is next week

the 8-team tourney is played at the Cumberland High School & Junior High School northwest of Greenup

* Pool A includes Cumberland, Newton, Edwards County, and Altamont

* Pool B includes Casey-Westfield, Dieterich, Charleston, and Oblong

each team plays three pool play games with a fourth & final game in cross pool play action

* there’s a total of four games, two in each school gym, next Monday and Tuesday

* then four games from 3:00 to 9:00 Friday afternoon and evening in the high school gym

* and the final four games from 3:00 to 9:00 Saturday afternoon and evening in the high school gym

the Newton Eagles play at 6:00 both next Monday night and Tuesday night

* the Eagles then play at 7:30 Friday night with their final game on Saturday to be determined

* the tournament’s final three games will be Friday afternoon

the Newton Lady Eagles play Monday night at 7:30, Tuesday night at 7:30, and Wednesday night at 6:30

* the Lady Eagles have their final game at 1:30 on Friday afternoon

the Olney Lady Tigers play Tuesday night at 5:30, Friday at 12 noon, and Saturday morning at 10:30

* Olney’s final game will be Saturday afternoon or evening to be determined

(OLNEY) in Boys High School Basketball – the annual Capital Classic is coming up next weekend

the 8-team tournament is played at the high schools in both Lawrenceville and Bridgeport

* the Red Hill site includes the host Salukis along with Olney, Salem, and Mt. Carmel

* the Lawrenceville site includes the host Indians, along with Marshall, Fairfield, and Teutopolis

it’s pool play with two sessions at each site that Friday and Friday night

* the pool play ends with session three at each site late Saturday morning into early afternoon

* the final cross pool play games will be in session four from 3:30 to 9:30 at the Red Hill High School

you’ll be able to hear all the Olney Tiger games on Freedom 92.9 WSEI sports

 

(OLNEY/NEWTON) there are many other Thanksgiving Week Tournaments next week as well

the Illini are back in the State Farm Center in Champaign for another nonconference game

the Lady Knights came back to defeat Kaskaskia College, 82-71
* despite 31 turnovers, the OCC Ladies hit 8 three-pointers and went on to claim the GRAC victory
* freshman guard Kimi Stokes led all scorers with 18 points while freshman center Nailah Ray had 12
* sophomore forward Hannah Coleman had another double/double with 12 points and 13 rebounds
at 3-2 on the year, the Lady Knights are now 1-0 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
among the other GRAC / Region games played last night
* Wabash Valley beat Vincennes University, 80-73
the next round of GRAC / Region matchups will be next Tuesday night – OCC will host Wabash Valley

the Blue Knights fell short in winning another magical comeback, losing at Kaskaskia College, 80-85
* with only one lead change, the OCC Men cut the Kaskaskia lead to only one point with only seconds left
* OCC’s freshman point guard Josiah Wallace led this team with 24 points and 9 rebounds
* sophomore guard Erikas Jakstys knocked in 13 points while freshman Davion Warren scored 12 points
at 4-1 on the year, the Blue Knights are 0-1 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference

the Lady Eagles lost their varsity game at Teutopolis, 29-60
* for Newton – Josie Grunloh scored 8 points while Abby Frohning had 7 points and 5 rebounds
Teutopolis won the junior varsity game, 63-18
the Lady Eagles are back in action tomorrow night at Robinson in a nonconference game

the Cubs won the 8th grade game over Albion, 41-24 as the varsity team improves to 3-1
* Olney was led by Chase Travis with 11 points while Kitch St. Pierre added 9 points
Olney also won the 7th grade game, 41-15 – the junior varsity is now 2-0 on the year
the Cubs are back in action this Saturday at the Olney Central College Shootout in “The Dungeon”
* the varsity plays Logootee at 11:30 and the junior varsity plays Salem at 12:45

North Clay won the 7th grade game as well, 50-36

the Lady Tigers won the varsity game over North Clay, 51-42
* Olney was led by Julie Luna with 16 points and Taylor LeCrone with 15 points
North Clay won the junior varsity game, 43-38
the Lady Tigers now prepare for the Robinson Thanksgiving Invitational next week
Olney will open up a week from tonight against Effingham St. Anthony – their first of four games there

the OCC Blue Knights got a 30-foot shot with :03 left to beat West Kentucky Tech, 81-79
* the game-winning three-pointer came from sophomore guard Erikas Jakstys
* point guard Josiah Wallace led OCC with 17 points – Mel’Quan Ames & Jakstys each scored 13 points
* the Blue Knights came back to beat Danville Area Community College, 96-90 in overtime Friday night
in the Classic’s other two games over the weekend

* Danville Area Community College beat the host Warriors Saturday, 80-75

Class 1A Third Place  :  Durand beat Newark in two sets    (25-19, 25-9)
Class 1A Championship  :  Payson Seymour beat Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor in two    (25-12, 27-25)
Class 2A Third Place  :  Newton beat Elgin Harvest Christian Academy in three sets   (20-25, 29-27, 25-22)
* congratulations to the Lady Eagles for finishing third in the state with a record of  32 wins and 8 losses
Class 2A Championship  :  St. Thomas More beat Quincy Notre Dame in three   (18-25, 25-19, 25-21)
Class 3A Third Place  :  Normal U High beat Arlington Heights in three sets   (25-21, 19-25, 25-19)
Class 3A Championship  :  Belleville Althoff Catholic beat Chicago Resurrection in two    (25-16, 25-23)
Class 4A Third Place  :  Crystal Lake Central beat St. Charles North in three sets    (25-19, 9-25, 25-23)
Class 4A Championship  :  Chicago Marist beat Minooka in three sets    (22-25, 25-22, 25-15)

 

(OLNEY)  at the IHSA Girls Swimming Sectional at Champaign Central High School on Saturday
Champaign Centennial was the top team beating out host Champaign Central, 219 to 188
* Urbana University High was 3rd at 182, then Sullivan (138) and Danville High (117)
* the four Olney Lady Tigers finished in 6th place as a team with 86 points
* then Charleston (58), Monticello (56.5), Mattoon (45), St. Anthony (35), and Mahomet-Seymour (31)
* then Urbana High (28), Vandalia (25), Mt. Vernon (24.5), Neoga (24), and Decatur St. Teresa (23.5)
* others were Effingham, Altamont, Newton, Centralia, Crab Orchard, Danville Schlarman, and Salem
although none of the Olney Lady Tigers advance to this weekend’s State Meet, the gals did very well
* Maria Mayorga was 3rd overall in the 200 yard freestyle
* Carolyn Powell was 3rd overall in the 500 yard freestyle
* Maria Mayorga was 7th among 28 swimmers in the 100 yard breaststroke
* Carolyn Powell was 7th among 23 swimmers in the 200 yard freestyle
* Kaylei Eubank was 11th overall in the 100 yard butterfly
* Samantha Trout was 16th among 31 swimmers in the 100 yard freestyle
* Samantha Trout was 17th among 27 swimmers in the 100 yard backstroke
the Olney girls teamed up to place 3rd overall in the 400 yard freestyle relay
the Olney girls teamed up to place 5th overall in the 200 yard medley relay
congratulations also to a Newton Lady Eagle who did well

* Athens ended the season for Red Hill, 34-14 – the Salukis end the year at LIC Champs at 11-1 overall

* Shelbyville beat Westville, 51-44

* Anna-Jonesboro beat Vandalia, 56-41
CLASS 4A  :
* Rochester beat Herrin, 56-14
* Highland beat Herscher, 77-47

(OLNEY)  in Girls Junior High Basketball Saturday – Olney swept two games at home
the Lady Cubs won the varsity game over Newton Jasper County, 59-31
* Olney was led by Anna Blank and Kenzie Weiler, each with 13 points – Jocelyn VanMatre had 10 points
Olney also won the junior varsity game, 29-27
the Lady Cubs are back in action tomorrow night as they travel to Salem to play the Lady Bobcats

* Eastern Illinois University won their 4th overtime game of the year beating Eastern Kentucky, 23-20

(OLNEY)  the Richland County High School will have its 2017 Fall Sports Award Night this coming Thursday night in the Sliva Auditorium, beginning at 7:00 – each fall sports team will be recognized for their accomplishments – all RCHS athletes, parents, guardians, other relatives, friends, and other interested parties are encouraged to attend the awards ceremony at RCHS – again, that’s this coming Thursday night
