(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball last night – the Cardinals have won two games in a row
* the Redbirds blanked the Mets, 5-0
* here’s how the other Midwestern MLB teams did last night
* those that won were the Cubs, Pirates, Tigers, and Astros
* those that lost were the Brewers, Reds, White Sox, Royals, Indians, Twins, Braves, and Rangers
the Cardinals are back in New York tonight for game three of the four game series against the Mets

 

(NEWTON)  at the Fifth Division Senior Legion Tournament yesterday in Highland
Newton Post 20 stayed alive in the tournament by beating and eliminating Carmi, 5-3
* Nate Meinhart was the winning pitcher, while Tim Weber picked up a save in relief
* Mitch Jansen and Matt Goedde each had an RBI single
* Tim Weber had two hits, while John Grunloh and Ben Britton each had a hit as well
* improving to 21-5, Newton Post 20 plays Aviston in an elimination round game today at 3:00

* in a winner’s bracket game – the Bears (Edwardsville/Alton/Roxana) beat Aviston, 5-2
* in another winner’s bracket game – Highland beat Herrin, 12-4
the tournament has three more games on this Wednesday
* an elimination round game at 12 noon between Herrin and Steeleville
* another elimination round game at 3:00 as Newton will battle Aviston
* a championship round game tonight at 7:00 between Highland and the Bears
the tournament continues with two games tomorrow and the final one or two games on Friday

 

(OLNEY)  at the Junior League Baseball Sub State Tournament up in Orion, in the Quad City Area
the a five-team, pool play tournament continued with two more games last night
* Olney played its final game of the tournament, beating Rochelle, 7-0 and going undefeated in the event
* the Brown County / Moline matchup was cancelled due to stormy weather – rescheduled tomorrow night
the tournament has two more games tonight
* Streator plays Brown County at 6:00
* Moline plays Rochelle at 8:00
Olney and the 2nd best team will advance to the Junior League State Tournament in Rock Falls next week 

 

(OLNEY)  the 12 Year Old Little League Baseball Section Tournament is underway in Olney
all hosted by the City of Olney, the Olney Little League, and Olney’s Musgrove Park
in the three team, double elimination, tournament – game one was played last night
* Paris (District 2) beat Beardstown (District 17), 9-6
the tournament’s second game is tonight
* the Olney All Stars will play Paris in a winner’s bracket game at 6:00
* the first elimination game is tomorrow night at 6:00
* the first championship game will be Friday night at 6:00

 

(OLNEY)  the 10 Year Old Little League Baseball Sub State in this weekend up in Mt. Sterling
a three team, round robin, tournament with single games to be played
* Paris (District 2) will play Macomb (District 17) at 6:00 this Friday night
* the Olney All Stars (District 1) will play Paris at 2:00 on Saturday afternoon
* then Olney will play Macomb in the tournament’s final game at 2:00 on Sunday
the winner will advance to the 10 Year Old State Tournament

 

(OLNEY) as of right now, we have no Sub State information about the Olney 11 Year Old Team

 

(OLNEY)  it’s a Girls All Star Softball Night coming up tomorrow night at Musgrove Park in Olney
* the Olney 14U, 10U, and 8U teams will all be playing double headers against teams from Red Hill

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Athletic Association’s “A League of Our Own” Ladies Fastpitch Softball is looking for teams for upcoming tournaments scheduled for the end of July thru October in Olney – teams must consist of players age freshmen in high school and older – for details, call Ed at  618-320-9590

 

(NEWTON)  here’s a note to all parents of athletes at the Jasper County Junior High School in Newton  :
*  the first practice for Junior High Softball is next Monday morning, July 24th, from 8:00 to 10:00, at the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park – a complete practice/tryout schedule will be handed out at that time
*  the first practice for Junior High Cross Country is the following Monday morning, July 31st, from 7:30 to 8:30 in Sam Parr State Park at the White Oak Area – all Jasper County boys and girls are invited out
*  the first practice for Junior High Baseball is also that Monday morning, July 31st, from 8:00 to 10:00 at the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park – the practice/tryout schedule will be handed out later
* and a parent’s meeting will be held for all three of the before-mentioned sports on Monday night, July 31st, in the NCHS/JCJH cafeteria, starting at 6:00 – parents of junior high students who want to participate in baseball, cross country, or softball should attend this meeting – parents will fill out all necessary forms, get practice schedules, game schedules, and pay the $25 per player participation fee – all athletes must have an up-to-date physical in order to begin practice – for more details, call the JCJH School, at  618-783-4202

 

(OLNEY)  the 8th Annual MS “Join the Movement” event is coming up on Saturday, July 29th, at the Richland County Middle School in Olney – the activities begin with the 25 mile Bike Ride at 7:30 that morning, then the 5K MS Challenge Run at 7:35, the 5K Walk at 7:40, and the MS Walk which is Handicap Accessible starts at 7:45 – while the registration fees are waived for all Richland County youth 18 and under by the Carrie Winter Trust, the registration will be available one hour before each event – printable forms are available online at  www.olneyms.org  or on the “Join the Movement” Facebook page – all event participants and the general public are then invited to the Olney VFW for a meal at 5:00 that evening and a fundraising auction at 6:00 – the meal is by donation at the door, plus carry-outs will be available – all proceeds to benefit the local MS Chapter – again, for more details, logon at  www.olneyms.org

 

(NEWTON)  last year’s reserved football seat ticket holders in Newton will have a chance to retain their reserved seats by calling the Newton Community High School office next Monday, July 24th, at 783-2303, to let the office know if they want the same seats as a year ago – the general public can purchase reserved football seats at NCHS from 8:00 to 12:00 noon daily, Monday & Tuesday, July 31st & August 1st – family passes are also available for purchase – call or stop by the NCHS office during regular office hours

the Olney swimmers won the Carmi Invitational by beating out 2nd place Marion, 614 to 258.5
* host Carmi was 3rd with 242 points, followed by Fairfield (229) and Harrisburg (194.5)
* McLeansboro was 6th with 120 points, followed by Mt. Carmel (103) and the Evansville YMCA (57)
* Herrin was 9th with 41 points – then Salem (40) and Mt. Vernon, Indiana (11)
the Olney swimmers won six of the twelve overall divisions – here’s the Tigershark winners
* Blair Grove in the 8 & Under Girls with 28 points
* Reid Brown in the 8 & Under Boys with 26 points
* Landyn Piercefield in the 12 & Under Boys with 28 points
* Maria Mayorga in the 14 & Under Girls with 28 points

(NEWTON)  congratulations to the Jasper County 13 & Under Babe Ruth team
it was Saturday that the Jasper County boys won the 2017 13 Year Old State Championship in Newton
* Jasper County claimed the title with wins over Mt. Carmel, 13-1 and Crawford County, 11-0
the Jasper County boys now advance to the Ohio Regional Tournament over in Munster, Indiana
the tournament will begin next Wednesday, July 26th, and run thru next Sunday, July 30th
again, congratulations to the Jasper County squad and best of luck next week

it’s the first time that all of the Olney All Star teams won their District Tournaments and were undefeated
the 11 and 10 Year Old teams now prepare for their Section or Sub-State Tournaments later this week

(ROBINSON)  at the 11 Year Old District One Little League Tournament in Robinson
The Championship game began on Thursday and was suspended in the 5th inning due to weather tied at 8.
With the game resuming:
* Olney over Mt. Carmel, 17-14
Congratulations to the Olney 11 Year Olds on winning the District tournament.

 

(FLORA)  at the 10 Year Old District One Little League Tournament in Flora
The Championship game was washed away on Thursday and got underway last night
* Olney over Salem, 12-7
Congratulations to the Olney 10 Year Olds on the District Title last night.

 

(DIETERICH)  at the East Junior Legion District Baseball Tournament last night in Dieterich
In winners bracket game from last night:
* Altamont over Dieterich, 6-2
In an elimination game from last night:
* Effingham over Newton, 11-3
The final three games of the tournament will be held today, with the top two teams advancing to the District Finals

the Cardinals begin the 2nd half of their season with a ten game road trip starting tonight in Pittsburgh

 

(ROBINSON)  at the 11 Year Old District One Little League Tournament in Robinson
the championship game was nearly finished before the rains interrupted with the game being suspended
* it’s Olney and Mt. Carmel in an 8-8 tie in the 5th inning
* the game will resume where its at tonight at 6:00 in Robinson
* should Mt. Carmel win, a second championship game would be tonight after the first game ends
the winning team will advance to the 11 Year Old Section or Sub State Tournament

 

(FLORA)  at the 10 Year Old District One Little League Tournament in Flora

* an elimination round game in the consolation bracket between Newton and Effingham at 7:30
the Tournament continues with the final three games tomorrow, on Saturday
the top two finishing teams will advance to the Junior Legion Division Tournaments

it’s all to be held in Love Park, up in Orion, Illinois, in the Quad City Area of northwestern Illinois
a five team pool play tournament where each team plays each other for a total of four games each
* the Olney All Stars will have their first game Saturday night at 6:30
* Olney returns for a Sunday afternoon game at 4:30, followed by a Monday evening game at 6:00
* and Olney’s final game is at 6:00 next Tuesday night before the final games on Wednesday night
the winning team will advance to the Junior League State Tournament on the following weekend
best of luck to the Olney 13 & 14 Year Olds as they travel north for the Sub State Tournament

 

(OLNEY)  and the 12 Year Old Little League Baseball Section Tournament will start next week
it’s being hosted by the City of Olney, the Olney Little League, and Olney’s Musgrove Park
* while the tournament begins next Tuesday, the Olney All Stars won’t play until next Wednesday

(OLNEY)  in Summer Swim Team news – the Olney Tigersharks fundraiser last night was rained out
* the Kickin’ For Kash event has now been rescheduled for Tuesday night, July 25th, from 6:00 to 10:00
to help them raise funds for expenses, go to their website and make a pledge at  www.olneytigersharks.com
the Tigersharks are back in competition tomorrow with eight other teams at the Carmi Invitational
