the Lady Tigers scored first but ended up losing to Flora, 13-4
* the visiting Wolfgals outhit the host Lady Tigers, 13 to 5
* Aliyah Wease led Olney at the plate with a home run, a single, and two RBI
* other Olney hits from Cheyla Lamb, Maci Baker, and Jessika Ochs
the Lady Tigers are quickly back in action today as they host their Varsity Tournament

* the Blue Knights beat Frontier Community College in a single game on the road, 10-0
* the OCC men improve to 14-4 on the year
the Blue Knights will host a twinbill today against Frontier at 12:00 and 3:00 on Conley Field

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Softball - Olney Central College is waiting to return to action
* the Lady Knights have not played in nearly two full weeks
the 8-2 Lady Knights will host a doubleheader with Frontier at 1:00 and 3:00 tomorrow

 

(OLNEY)  the IHSA Boys Class 3A and 4A State Basketball Tournaments began yesterday in Peoria
Class 3A Semi-Final  :  Oak Park Fenwick beat Bloomington, 67-52
Class 3A Semi-Final  :  Chicago Morgan Park beat Springfield Lanphier, 60-53
Class 4A Semi-Final  :  Chicago Whitney Young beat Palatine Fremd, 53-47
Class 4A Semi-Final  :  Chicago Simeon beat Bolingbrook, 60-50
the finals for both classes are today thru tonight up at Carver Arena in Peoria

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Softball – the Olney Varsity Softball Tournament is today at RCHS in Olney
* the host Lady Tigers will play Mt. Carmel at 11:00 this morning
* then Newton plays Robinson at around 1:00 this afternoon
* the losing teams will play for third place at around 3:00 today
* then the winning teams play in the championship game at around 5:00 this afternoon
a concession stand and restrooms are available, plus no admission charge

the Eagles beat Mt. Carmel, 9-2 as Newton and the visiting Golden Aces each had 5 hits each
* Newton’s Mitch Jansen got the win, pitching five innings, allowing no runs and striking out one
* Nate Meinhart led Newton with a double, a single, and one RBI
* John Grunloh had an RBI single, plus other hits from Mitch Bierman and Lucas Geier
the 1-0 Eagles are back in action next Monday when they travel to Effingham to play the Hearts

the Lady Cubs lost a tough 8th grade match at Salem in three sets, 13-25, 25-20, 11-15
* top Olney players were Mikaela Inskeep, Paige Tedford, Madelyn Rusk, and Katey Zuber
Olney won the 7th grade match, but lost the 6th grade match
the varsity Lady Cubs now prepare for the Class L Regional at Flora next Tuesday night

two of the sixteen Class S Regionals involved area teams and ended last night

Class S Regional Semi-Finals @ Mt. Carmel  :

* while Illinois enters the game at 19-14 on the year, the visiting Broncos come to town at 20-11

all part of the March Madness Experience inside the Peoria Civic Center’s Exhibition Hall
it’s the first-ever IHSA / Special Olympics Illinois State Unified Basketball Tournament
a pair of downstate teams will be featured among the total eight team field
* the Mt. Vernon team will play at 1:00 this afternoon on the Exhibition Hall’s Court #1
* the Salem team will also play at 1:00 this afternoon on the Exhibition Hall’s Court #2
* the other teams are from Aurora, Rockton, Flossmoor, Harvey, Plano, and Princeton
the final games will be played tomorrow at 1:00 and 2:30 using both courts in the Exhibition Hall
the general admission tickets are $2 per person or free for those with tickets to the 3A/4A state games

(OLNEY/NEWTON)  in Girls High School Track from last Saturday’s Indoor Meet at Charleston
* there were 75 schools represented with hundreds of athletes from all over Illinois taking part
Newton had 15 girls competing in twelve of the fifteen events held at Eastern Illinois University
the Lady Eagles had 12 girls that were among the top fifty finishers in their respective events
* Grace Hartrich was 12th in the shot put                 
* Mallory Bergbower was 12th in the high jump
* Emma Weber, Tori Zumbahlen, Claire Carr, and Abby Stone were 12th in the 1600 meter relay
* Emma Weber was 19th in the triple jump
* Emma Weber, Alex Haarman, Brooklyn Herman, and Abby Stone were 23rd in the 800 meter relay
* Jacklyn Barthelme was 29th in the long jump
* Liz Volk was 31st in the 60 meter hurdles               
* Tori Zumbahlen was 31st in the 400 meter dash
* Abby Stone was 31st in the 200 meter dash              
* Courtney Hadra was 31st in the shot put
* Brooklyn Herman was 46th in the 60 meter dash        
* Alex Haarman was 50th in the 60 meter dash
* others included Alivia Shull, Miranda Clinton, Alexis Bell, and Mya Kuhn
Olney had only 6 girls competing in five of the fifteen events at the Indoor Meet in Charleston
the Lady Tigers had only 2 girls that were among the top fifty finishers in their respective events
* Tara Hughes was 17th in the high jump
* Chelsea Ochs was 48th in the 200 meter dash
* others were Bailey Washburn, Gracie Julian, Hallie Troester, and Pandora Worrell
the Newton Lady Eagles will compete this Saturday at the Gene Armer Invitational in Champaign
the Olney Lady Tigers are back in action in a quadrangular meet a week from Monday at Effingham

(OLNEY)  in Men’s Division I College Basketball last night – Illinois continues its’ season with a win
* the Illini had no problem advancing to the NIT second round by beating Valparaiso, 82-57
* led by interim coach Jamall Walker, Illinois improves to 19-14 on the year
the Illini will now play Boise State, who last night upset Utah, 73-68
Illinois will host the second round NIT game in Champaign with the date and time yet to be determined

 

(OLNEY)  the IHSA Boys Class 3A and 4A Super-Sectionals were last night around Illinois
here’s the results that involved some of our downstate teams
Class 3A @ Springfield  :
* Springfield Lanphier beat Centralia, 64-38
Class 4A @ Normal  :
* Chicago Simeon beat Edwardsville, 76-64
with these two results, all downstate teams have been eliminated from the Boys 3A / 4A postseason
the Class 3A and 4A State Tournaments are this weekend up at Carver Arena in Peoria

here’s some of the results involving area downstate teams
Class 1A @ Sigel  :
* Grayville beat Stewardson-Strasburg in two sets
Class 2A @ Effingham  :
* Paris Crestwood beat Albion in two sets
Class 3A @ Teutopolis  :
* Shelbyville Moulton beat Robinson Nuttall in two sets
Class 3A @ Auburn  :
* Pana beat Roxana in two sets
Class 4A @ Mattoon  :
* Charleston beat Champaign Edison in three sets
Class 4A @ Clinton  :
* Mt. Zion beat Chatham Glenwood in three sets
all these 8th Grade Sectional winners advance to their respective State Tournaments this Saturday

 

(OLNEY)  in regular season Junior High Volleyball – Olney swept three matches on the road
the Lady Cubs won the 8th grade match at Mt. Carmel in three sets, 17-25, 25-19, 15-9
* Olney was led by Reagan Ameter, Allison Harness, Kristen Greenwood, Madelyn Rusk, & Katey Zuber
Olney won the 7th grade match in two sets and won the 6th grade match in three sets
the Lady Cubs will end their regular season schedule on the road at Salem this Thursday night

* Wabash Valley’s Colton Alldredge received the GRAC Sportsmanship Award
* Southwestern Illinois’ Jalaam Hill was the GRAC Freshman of the Year
* John A. Logan’s Kyle Smithpeters was named the GRAC Coach of the Year
there were ten other players named to the All GRAC Team

* Shawnee’s Michael Miller and Adam Saeed
* Wabash Valley’s DeAngelo Isby and T.J. Parham

* Shawnee finished in 2nd place in the GRAC at 13-4                           (19-10 overall)
* Wabash Valley ended up in 3rd place in the GRAC at 11-6-1            (23-9-1 overall)
* Kaskaskia was in 4th place in the GRAC at 11-7                                (19-12 overall)
* Rend Lake finished in 5th place in the GRAC at 9-8                           (17-12 overall)
* Lake Land ended up in 6th place in the GRAC at 9-9                         (14-18 overall)
