* the Redbirds beat the Brewers, 10-2

* those that won were the Cubs, Reds, Royals, Twins, and Rangers
* those that lost were the Pirates, White Sox, Tigers, and Astros
* the Indians and Braves had their respective games rained out

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Cross Country yesterday at Olney Central College
Olney won the six team meet by beating out 2nd place Robinson, 33 to 64 – Lawrenceville was 3rd at 66
* Effingham St. Anthony finished 4th with 79 points, followed by Teutopolis (93) and Casey-Westfield (0)
here’s how the individuals finished up on the 2.96 mile course
* Lawrenceville’s Jack Holden won the race, three seconds better than Casey-Westfield’s Cort Ross
* Olney’s Gavin Kirby and Tyler Hughes finished 3rd and 4th just three seconds apart
* Robinson’s Wyatt Bonnell rounded out the top five
* Olney’s Owen Powell was 6th, Caleb Thomas was 9th, Colin Gilreath was 16th, Jordan Belcher was 26th
the Tigers are back in cross country action tomorrow at Lawrenceville

* Newton’s top runner was Victor Sandschafer, who finished 2nd overall on the 3 mile course
* Newton’s Tucker Rieman was 3rd, Creighton Chesnut was 6th, and Bob Rauch was 12th
* Newton’s Garrett Slankard finished 13th and Alec Greenwood was 15th
the Eagle runners are back in cross country action tomorrow when they host Cumberland and Oblong

Effingham defeated Newton in the two team meet, 16 to 47
* Newton’s top runner was Abby Stone, who finished in 5th place overall

* Riley Doll won the #4 singles match, 6-2, 6-2

Flora beat the Tigers by six strokes, 165 to 171
* the Match Co-Medalists were Flora’s Aven Kimmell and Landon Carter, each with a three over 38
* Olney’s best round was Coen McDowell’s 40
* Olney’s Ryan Tolliver and Logan Muston each shot a 43, while Zach Duenas shot a 45
there were no team scores on the Girls side
* the best round was from Olney’s Madeline McKinney with a 50 – Abigail Nealis shot a 60
both Olney teams are back in action today as they host teams from Oblong and Lawrenceville / Red Hill

the Eagles beat Pana, 6-1
* Newton’s Nacho Moragues and Cole Farley each had two goals

(OLNEY)  The Guardian Center has its fundraising Firecracker 5K Challenge this Saturday, September 2nd, in Grayville – it’s a 5 Kilometer Run / Walk with race day registration that morning from 7:00 to 7:45, followed by start time at 8:00 – the cost is $20 for all entries and awards will be given to the top three in the various age groups – for details or to get a sign up registration form, logon at  www.theguardiancenter.org

* the St. Anthony junior varsity was 5th with 20 points while Robinson 6th with 19 points

the Redbirds beat Tampa Bay Saturday night, 6-4 but lost yesterday in 10 innings, 3-2

* those that won two games were the Pirates, Brewers, and Indians
* those that split two were the Cubs, White Sox, Tigers, Twins, and Astros
* those that lost both games were the Reds, Royals, Rangers, and Braves
the Cardinals are idle today and tonight before starting a ten game road trip
the Redbirds are in Milwaukee tomorrow night for the first of two against the Brewers

 

(NEWTON/OLNEY)  in Boys High School Soccer – the Red & Gold Invite at Charleston ended Saturday
the final four matches on Saturday involved the Red Pool teams
Olney and Monticello played to a 2-2 tie
* Olney had goals from Jacob McVicker and Braden Nicholson – also great play in goal by Isaac Pampe
Newton blanked Effingham, 5-0
* Newton’s Nacho Moragues had 2 goals while Ross Farley and Giuseppe Cucinella had 1 goal each
* the Eagles’ assists came from Ben Carr and Jack Chapman with two each
then Saturday afternoon, Olney lost to Effingham, 4-1
* the Tigers lone goal was scored by Trey Nosek, assisted by Kye Stallard
Newton played Monticello to a 2-2 tie
* Ben Carr led the Eagles with 1 goal and a penalty kick
in two junior varsity matches from Saturday
* Olney lost to Monticello, 3-1 but the jv Tigers beat Effingham, 2-0

the Lady Eagles won all four of their matches to win the championship

* Newton beat Lawrenceville in two sets, 25-11 and 25-15
* Newton won the title match by beating Hutsonville-Palestine in two sets, 25-17 and 26-24

the Junior Eagles beat Sullivan, 10-2 then defeated Effingham, 9-4
* the winning pitcher was Mason Mulvey, winning both games
* top Jasper County hitters were Ben Meinhart, Evan Schafer, Owen Mahaffey, and Mason Mulvey
the 10-2 Jasper County boys are back in action today as they travel to Mattoon

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior Football League action from Saturday – Olney won two of three games at home
* the Olney 3rd&4th (2-0) Grade Tigers beat Lawrenceville, 36-24
* the Olney 5th&6th (0-3) Grade Tigers lost a tough one to Lawrenceville, 34-14
* the Olney 7th&8th (1-2) Grade Tigers beat Lawrenceville, 26-14
all three Olney teams are on the road to Bridgeport this Saturday to play the Red Hill teams

(OLNEY)  the Richland County F.O.P. (Fraternal Order of Police) will have a fundraising Golf Outing on Sunday afternoon, September 24th, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – while sponsorships are now available for area businesses and/or individuals, teams of four players can also now sign up at a cost of $200 per team – it all begins with a pulled pork lunch at 11:30 and a shotgun start at 1:00 – registration is requested by September 8th – if any questions, call Kevin at  618-839-5922  or the Country Club in Olney

 

(OLNEY)  the annual Richland Memorial Hospital Foundation Charity  Classic is set for Friday, September 22nd, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – it begins with registration and lunch at 11:00 and a shotgun start at 1:00, followed by the catered dinner served at 5:00 – there will be various prizes and more – the cost is $350 for a team of four, which includes lunch, dinner, golf carts, and golfing – plus there are $20 tickets for dinner only on sale as well – space is limited to the first 36 teams – all proceeds will benefit the Medical School Fund – for details or to sign up, call the Foundation Office at  618-395-6088

(OLNEY)  The Guardian Center will have its fundraising Firecracker 5K Challenge this Saturday, September 2nd, in Grayville – it’s a 5 Kilometer Run / Walk with race day registration that morning from 7:00 to 7:45, followed by start time at 8:00 – the cost is $20 for all entries and t-shirts are guaranteed for all early paid registrants by August 18th – awards will be given to the top three in the various age groups – all proceeds from the Grayville Days event will benefit The Guardian Center, a non-profit organization committed to the protection & healing of physically & sexually abused children & their families – based in Carmi, with satellite offices in Robinson, Mt. (OLNEY)  in Girls High School Tennis yesterday – Olney won its season opener on the road
the Lady Tigers beat Mt. Carmel, 8-1
Olney won all six of the singles matches, all but one in two straight sets
* Logan Kauble won the #1 singles match in two sets, 6-0, 6-2
* Zoe Alexander won the #2 singles match in two sets, 6-3, 6-3
* Cait O’Dell won the #3 singles match in two sets, 6-3, 6-2
* Riley Doll came back to win the #4 singles match in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8
* Paige Steber won the #5 singles match in two sets, 6-2, 6-3
* Katie Hostetter won the #6 singles match in two sets, 6-0, 6-1
Olney took two of the three doubles matches, both in two straight sets

Newton won the varsity match over Olney, 4-1
* Newton’s goals by Nacho Moragues, Jack Chapman, Cole Farley, and Giuseppe Cucinella
* the Eagle’s assists included three from Ben Carr and one by Cole Farley
* the lone Olney goal was scored by Kye Stallard, assisted by Josiah Burkhartt
* the Tigers also had some great play by Dylan Seesengood and Trey Nosek
Olney played its junior varsity match against a Mattoon team to a 3-3 tie
* Jonas Burkhartt scored two of the goals for Olney while Brady Thompson netted the other goal
the Invitational continues with four more matches today, although the Newton and Olney teams are idle
* both local teams play tomorrow morning at 9:00 – Newton against Effingham & Olney against Monticello
* the Olney junior varsity team plays tomorrow morning at 10:30 against another Mattoon team

Olney also won the junior varsity match in two sets and won the fresh/soph match in two sets
the Lady Tigers are back on the court next Thursday when they travel to Mt. Carmel
