(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball last night – the Cardinals came back to win on the road
* the Redbirds beat the Reds, 8-7 in ten innings
here’s how some of the other Midwestern teams did last night
* those that won were the Cubs, Brewers, Indians, Astros, and Rangers
* those that lost were the Pirates, White Sox, Royals, Twins, Tigers, and Braves
the Cardinals are back in action tonight with game two of three in Cincinnati against the Reds

 

(NEWTON)  in Boys High School Cross Country yesterday at Sam Parr State Park near Newton
Robinson came away with a 5 point victory by beating out 2nd place Olney, 25 to 30
* Effingham was 3rd in the four team meet with 81 points, followed by Newton
here’s the individual results for the 2.8 mile race
* Robinson’s Lukas Baird won the race followed by teammates Kobe Lorance and Wyatt Bonnell
* Olney’s Gavin Kirby finished 4th, followed by teammates Tyler Hughes (5th) and Caleb Thomas (6th)
* Olney’s Braden Nicholson was 7th and Owen Powell was 8th
* Olney’s Collin Gilreath was 11th and Jordan Belcher was 12th
* Newton’s top runner was Tucker Rieman in 13th place followed by Creighton Chesnut in 23rd
the Eagles are back in action tomorrow at the Mattoon Invitational, at Lake Land College

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Cross Country yesterday at Sam Parr State Park near Newton
Effingham won the four team event by beating out 2nd place Olney, 20 to 46
* the host Lady Eagles finished 3rd with 63 points, followed by Robinson

* Newton’s Abby Stone won the race finishing 35 seconds ahead of Effingham’s Miranda Fox
* Effingham’s Kourtney Cordes and Abby Weiss were 3rd and 4th – Robinson’s Sami Johnson was 5th
* Olney’s top runner was Danni Murphy in 8th place followed by teammate Tristen Payne in 9th
* Olney’s Gracie Julian was 11th and Lydia Allen was 12th
* Newton’s Mya Kuhn finished 13th with Olney’s Hallie Troester coming in 14th
* then Olney’s Abby Rauch was 17th and Newton’s Jaclyn Barthelme was 18th

(NEWTON)  in Boys High School Soccer yesterday – Newton remains undefeated with a home win
the Eagles beat Christ Our Rock Lutheran, 14-0 improving to 9 wins, no losses, and 2 ties
* Giuseppe Cucinella and Cole Farley led Newton with 3 goals each
* Nacho Moragues and Ross Farley each had 2 goals apiece
* with single goals from Jack Chapman, Andrew Moore, Ben Carr, and Jacob Kaufmann
* Ben Carr had 4 assists, with single assists by Cole Farley, Eli Weber, and Giuseppe Cucinella
by the way, Newton won their match this past Saturday, beating Georgetown-Ridge Farm, 3-0
the Soccer Eagles are back in action tomorrow at Effingham against St. Anthony

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Tennis yesterday – Olney lost a tough match on the road
the Lady Tigers fell at Teutopolis, 3 to 6
Olney won two of the six singles matches played
* Logan Kauble won the #1 singles match in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4
* Paige Steber won the #6 singles match in two sets, 6-3, 6-1
Olney won one of the three doubles matches played
* Zoe Alexander and Katie Hostetter won the #3 doubles match in two sets, 6-1, 6-0
in junior varsity action – Olney won all five matches, including four doubles’ and one singles’
the Lady Tigers are back on the Olney courts tomorrow when they host Effingham

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Tennis yesterday – Newton won on the road
the Lady Eagles beat Charleston, 6-3 with no individual information provided

(NEWTON)  in High School Volleyball last night – Newton swept two matches on the road
the Lady Eagles won the varsity match over Cumberland in two sets, 25-12, 25-14
* Newton was led by Maddi Hemrich, Kelsi Geltz, Abby Frohning, Mariah Earnest, & Taylor Smith
Newton also won the junior varsity match in two sets
the Lady Eagles are back in LIC action tomorrow night when they host Lawrenceville at NCHS

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Baseball yesterday – Jasper County had its season come to a tough end
the Junior Eagles lost in the Class 2A Regional Championship, falling to Casey-Westfield, 7-1
* Jasper County was outhit in the loss, 9-3
* Newton’s hits were from Evan Schafer, Ben Meinhart, and Mason Mulvey
the Junior Eagles finish their great season with a record at 18 wins and only 3 losses
Casey-Westfield advances to their IESA Class 2A Sectional Saturday to play T-town at Teutopolis

(Fraternal Order of Police) will have a fundraising Golf Outing this coming Sunday afternoon, the 24th, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – there’s still room for teams of four players to sign up at a cost of $200 per team – it begins with a pulled pork lunch at 11:30 and a shotgun start at 1:00 – if any questions or to sign up, call Kevin at  618-839-5922  or the Country Club in Olney

 

(OLNEY)  the annual Richland Memorial Hospital Foundation Charity  Classic is this Friday, September 22nd, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – it begins with registration and lunch at 11:00 and a shotgun start at 1:00, followed by the catered dinner served at 5:00 – there will be various prizes and more – the cost is $350 for a team of four, which includes lunch, dinner, golf carts, and golfing – plus there are $20 tickets for dinner only on sale as well – space is limited to the first 36 teams – all proceeds will benefit the Medical School Fund – for details or to sign up, call the Foundation Office at  618-395-6088

here’s how some of the other Midwestern teams did with a limited MLB schedule on Monday
* the only team that won was the Brewers
* those that lost were the Pirates, Twins, and Tigers
* all other Midwestern teams were idle on Monday, including the Cubs, Reds, White Sox, and Royals
the Cardinals are back in action tonight, starting a three game series against the Reds in Cincinnati

 

(NEWTON)  in the National Football League last night – week two came to an end
* Detroit beat the Giants, 24-10

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Volleyball last night – Olney swept a pair of matches at home
the Lady Tigers won the varsity match over Martinsville in two sets, 25-16, 25-23
* Olney was led by Faith Stallard, Raegan Hires, Addie Hemrich, Emi Rose, and Colleen Inyart
Olney also won the junior varsity match in two sets
the Lady Tigers are back in action Thursday night when they host Edwards County at RCHS

Olney came away with first place as the Cubs outran 2nd place Salem, 58 to 90
* Centralia finished in 3rd place with 99 points and several other teams that followed
here’s the top varsity runners for Olney on 1.8 mile course
* Brooks Julian won the race finishing 1st overall
* Olney’s Holden Hough was 7th and Drew Blank was 11th
Olney was 2nd among the junior varsity boys
* the top jv runner was Alex Diel in 4th place
Olney also did well in the meet’s Open Race
* top runners were Alex Nealis finishing 1st overall, followed by Ian Strong in 5th place

here’s the top varsity runners for the 3rd place Lady Wildcats on the 1.8 mile course
* Tatum David won the race finishing 1st while teammate Danielle Clodfelter was in 5th place
there were no team scores in the junior varsity 1.3 mile course
* St. Joe was led by Dorothy McKinney (18th) and Briley Kocher (19th)
the Lady Wildcats were back running yesterday against Allendale

the host Cubs won the eleven team event by beating out 2nd place Effingham St. Anthony, 34 to 65
* Jasper County was 3rd with 75 points, followed by Robinson at 108 and Olney St. Joe in 5th at 115
* Casey-Westfield was 6th with 220 points, followed by Effingham at 232
* rounding out the other teams were Flora, Cumberland, Fairfield, and New Hebron
here’s the top runners for the 5th place Wildcats on the 1.8 mile course at OCC
* Jarrett Doll finished in 10th, followed by teammate Evan Uhl in 14th place
there were no team scores in the junior varsity 1.3 mile course
* St. Joe was led by Chase Ackman (16th) and Ruger Stevens (20th)

* the Lady Eagles won their first pool play match by beating Teutopolis in two sets, 25-12, 25-22
* Newton then lost in pool play to Shelbyville in three sets, 25-20, 14-25, 13-15
* the Lady Eagles lost their final pool play match, falling to Pana in two sets, 26-28, 13-25
* Newton won their final match of the day by beating St. Anthony in two sets, 25-23, 25-16
* Newton’s top players on the day were Abby Frohning, Maddi Hemrich, Josie Meinhart, & Mariah Earnest
Olney ended the day at St. Anthony High School with two wins and three loses
* the Lady Tigers lost their first pool play match falling to Tri County in three sets
* Olney won its final two pool play matches by beating Sullivan in two sets and St. Anthony in three sets
* the Lady Tigers then lost in crossover play, falling to the eventual champions, Pana, in two sets

* Flora was 5th with a 343 score, followed by Paris at 368, Robinson at 380, and Tri County at 397
* Oakwood was 9th at 433, followed by Salt Fork at 434, plus other golfers from Urbana and Decatur
the Match Medalist was Mattoon’s Nye Nguyen with a low round 71

Flora won the 8 team tournament by beating 2nd place Mt. Zion, 139 to 116
* Newton tied Teutopolis for 3rd place, each with 115 points while Robinson was 5th with 100 points
* Paris finished 6th with 83 points, followed by Casey-Westfield at 63 and Charleston at 53

Clay City won the 8 team tournament for the second year in a row by winning all five of their matches

(OLNEY)  the annual Richland Memorial Hospital Foundation Charity  Classic is this Friday, September 22nd, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – it begins with registration and lunch at 11:00 and a shotgun start at 1:00, followed by the catered dinner served at 5:00 – there will be various prizes and more – the cost is $350 for a team of four, which includes lunch, dinner, golf carts, and golfing – plus there are $20 tickets for dinner only on sale as well – space is limited to the first 36 teams – all proceeds will benefit the Medical School Fund – for details or to sign up, call the Foundation Office at  618-395-6088

* Illinois lost last night to South Florida, 47-23 – the 2-1 Illini will host Nebraska next Friday night

the Tigers fell to Marshall, 28-20

* Jasper County was 3rd with 75 points, followed by Robinson at 108 and Olney St. Joe at 115
* Casey-Westfield was 6th with 220 points, followed by Effingham at 232
* rounding out the other teams were Flora, Cumberland, Fairfield, and New Hebron

* Brooks Julian won the 1.9 mile race finishing 1st overall

* other teams were Effingham, Fairfield, New Hebron, and Cumberland

* Allison Harness finished in 3rd place, followed by teammate Carley Greenwood in 17th

the Cardinals are back in action today with the first of three this weekend against the Cubs in Chicago

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Soccer yesterday – Olney won two matches on Ed Webber Field at OCC
the Tigers won the varsity match over Effingham St. Anthony, 3-2
* Jacob McVicker scored two of Olney’s goals with the other score knocked in by Trey Nosek
* Kye Stallard had two assists while Seth Kocher had the other
* Olney had some great defense by Josiah Burckhartt and Dylan Seessengood
Olney also won the junior varsity match over St. Anthony, 3-0
* the jv goals included two by Jacob McVicker and one from Isaac Pampe
the Soccer Tigers are back on the pitch next Monday when they travel south to Harrisburg High

the Lady Tigers defeated Fairfield, 9-0 as Olney won all six of the singles matches
* Logan Kauble won the #1 singles match, 8-1

* Cait O’Dell won the #3 singles match, 8-2
* Riley Doll won the #4 singles match, 8-0
* Katie Hostetter won the #5 singles match, 8-1
* Carmen Rodriguez won the #6 singles match, 8-3
Olney also won all three of the doubles matches – the winning pairs were

the host Warriors won the four team match, beating out 2nd place Robinson by five strokes, 173 to 178
* Marshall was six strokes back in 3rd place (184) while Olney was six strokes back in 4th (190)
* the Match Medalist was Robinson’s Takoda Wheeler with a one over par 36
* Olney’s best round was a 46 by Ryan Tolliver while teammate Coen McDowell shot a 47
* Olney’s Logan Muston had a 48 while Zach Duenas and Jaedyn Moyes each shot a 49
the Tigers are back on the links next Monday when they travel down to Mt. Carmel

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Cross Country – Teutopolis hosted a four team meet
Effingham won the event by beating out 2nd place Teutopolis, 28 to 53
* Dieterich finished 3rd with 65 points, followed by Newton in 4th place with 81 points
* Newton’s top runner was Abby Stone finishing in 2nd place among the 34 runners
* Miranda Fox of Effingham won the race while T-town’s Kara Weichman was 3rd
* Newton’s Sydney Rudolphi was 16th, Mya Kuhn was 20th, and Jaclyn Barthleme was 22nd
the Lady Eagles are back running tomorrow at the Olney Invitational at Olney Central College

* T-town’s Noah Probst won the race followed by teammates Jordan Schumacher & Ethan Weidner
* Newton’s Seth Weber was 11th and Creighton Chesnut was 18th

Olney St. Joe finished in 3rd place in the girls junior varsity race
* Kelysse Weiler finished in 2nd place followed by teammate Kyrstin Weiler in 7th place
