* the Redbirds beat Toronto, 8-4 in eleven innings, then beat the Blue Jays again, 6-4
the Cardinals continue their home stand with the first of three tonight against the Reds in St. Louis

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Softball – Olney Central College is set to begin postseason action
* the Lady Knights ended the regular season with an overall record of  28-22 and 17-17 in the GRAC
* OCC begins the Region 24 Tournament with a best-of-three series at Rend Lake College near Ina
the Lady Knights are scheduled for games at 2:00 & 4:00 today – if needed, game three would be tomorrow

the Tigers beat Lawrenceville, 5-1 although Olney was outhit by the visiting Indians, 7 to 6
* Dylan Hires was Olney’s winning pitcher, allowing 1 run on 5 hits, while striking out 4
* Gage Miller led Olney with a double, a single, and a run scored
* Luke Lambird had an RBI double and Lucas Harmon had an RBI single
Olney improves to 13-7 overall, now 4-2 in the Little Illini Conference
Lawrenceville falls back to 8-9 on the year, now 2-3 in the LIC
the Tigers are back in LIC conference action next Monday at Flora

the Eagles beat Robinson, 9-4 as Newton outhit the host Maroons, 11 to 5
* John Grunloh was the winning pitcher, allowing no earned runs and striking out 2 in six innings
* Grunloh helped himself with 2 doubles, a single, 3 RBI, and 2 runs scored
* Mitch Bierman had a triple, 2 singles, 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI – Nick Cohorst had a 2 RBI hit
Newton improves to 10-6 on the year, now 6-1 in the Little Illini Conference
Robinson falls to 10-9 overall, now 3-3 in the LIC

the Lady Eagles beat Robinson, 9-1 as Newton outhit the Lady Maroons, 12 to 3
the game was moved from Robinson to Newton due to wet field conditions in Crawford County
* Kenzi Smith was the winning pitcher, giving up only 1 earned run and striking out 1
* Smith also had 2 hits and 2 RBI – Maddie Stanley and Olivia Shipman each had 2 hits
* Ariel Richards, Kelsi Geltz, and Taylor Smith each had an RBI hit
Newton improves to 12-7 on the year, now 5-2 in the LIC
Robinson falls back to 13-3 overall, now 5-1 in the conference

* Austin Atwood won the #2 singles match in four sets, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6, 7-3
* Jack Bettis won the #3 singles match in two sets, 6-4, 6-0
* Mac Alexander won the #4 singles match in three sets, 7-6, 7-3, 7-5
* Connor Walker and Tanner Hendrickson won the #1 doubles match in two sets, 6-1, 6-1

the Eagles lost to Paris, 9-0 as the host Tigers won all nine matches
* Newton’s top three singles players were Ethan Carter, Holden Kerner, and Zach Huschle
* the Eagle’s other singles players were Dylan Ochs, Sam Hemrich, and Isaac Ludington
* Newton’s double pairs were Carter & Kerner, Huschle & Hemrich, and Ochs & Ludington

the Cubs finished a close 2nd place to host Carmi, 68 to 65 – Mt. Carmel was 3rd with 48 points
Olney won six of the fourteen varsity events

* Maria Mayorga won the 100 meter dash
* Allison Harness, Joan Biyok, Adrielle Smith, and Carley Greenwood won the 1600 meter relay
Olney had six 2nd place finishes

the OCC Lady Knights were cancelled yesterday out at Lindenwood-Belleville University
* the Lady Knights are scheduled to begin Region 24 Tournament action tomorrow
the OCC Blue Knights were off yesterday, scheduled to play a single GRAC game today at John A. Logan

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Baseball yesterday – Olney outlasted some early rain to win at home
the Tigers held on to beat Mt. Carmel, 2-0 as Olney outhit the visiting Golden Aces, 7 to 2
* Landon Pride was the winning pitcher with five innings of shutout baseball while striking out ten
* Luke Lambird led Olney at the plate with 2 hits, 3 stolen bases, and 2 runs scored
* sophomores Brandon Murphy and Isaac Pampe each had 2 hits apiece
now at 12-7, the Tigers are scheduled for LIC Conference action today at home against Lawrenceville
most all other area sporting events were washed out, including the Lady Tigers softball game at RCHS

* Leah Snyder in both the shot put and discus throw
* Carmen Rodriguez in both the 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles

(NEWTON/OLNEY)  in Illinois High School Sports news – the IHSA Board of Directors met last week
* agreed to keep the IHSA Track & Field State Finals at EIU in Charleston thru the year 2022
* this will include both Girls & Boys State Final Meets in all three classes
* O’Brien Field first hosted the Boys’ State Meet in 1972 due to a scheduling conflict at the U of  I
* the Boys’ State Meet returned to Memorial Stadium in Champaign in 1973
* but then returned to Eastern Illinois University in 1974, where it’s been ever since
* EIU is the only home the Girls’ State Meet has ever known with its inaugural finals in 1973
in other IHSA Board of Director’s action from the meeting
* agreed to begin a search for an Assistant Executive Director position
* did not approve a proposal to set fixed numbers to determine classification cutoffs in all four-class sports

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Softball yesterday – OCC won a GRAC doubleheader at home
the Lady Knights took two from Southwestern Illinois, 8-1 and 13-5
* the Lady Knights improve to 28-22 overall, now 17-17 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
OCC is scheduled for a non-GRAC twin bill today at Lindenwood-Belleville University

* the Lady Knights improve to 26-22 overall and now 15-17 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
the OCC Ladies are quickly back into GRAC action today as they host Southwestern Illinois at OCC

(NEWTON)  in Boys High Tennis yesterday – Newton picked up a win at home
the Eagles beat Charleston, 5-2 as Newton won all four of the singles matches played
* Ethan Carter won the #1 singles match in two sets, 6-1, 6-0
* Holden Kerner won the #2 singles match in two sets, 6-2, 6-0
* Zach Huschle won the #3 singles match in two sets, 6-0, 6-0
* Faron Bartens won the #4 singles match in two sets, 6-0, 6-3
Newton took one of the three doubles matches
* Sam Hemrich and Brett Woodard teamed up to win the #2 doubles match in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2
the Tennis Eagles are back on the courts today when they’ll host Robinson

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Track yesterday – Newton hosted a four team meet at NCHS
Teutopolis won the event by beating out 2nd place Robinson by a slim two point margin, 124 to 122
* the host Lady Eagles were 3rd with 114 points – Palestine-Hutsonville finished in 4th place
Newton won four of the total eighteen events with five 2nd place finishes

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Track yesterday at Olney, three teams took part in a unique event
* the athletes from Olney, Newton, and Robinson formed mixed teams and ran various relay races
there were no official results or scores from the event at Richland County High School

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls Junior High Track from Saturday’s Olney Invitational at Richland County High School
the host Lady Cubs won the six team meet by beating out 2nd place Red Hill, 112.5 to 108
* Mt. Vernon was 3rd with 77 points and Flora was 4th with 73 points
* Newton Jasper County was 5th with 65.5 points and Carmi was 6th with 52 points
Olney won one of the twelve varsity events with six 2nd place finishes
* Carley Greenwood won the 400 meter dash
* Maria Mayorga was 2nd in both the 100 meter dash and the long jump
* Allison Harness was 2nd in the 400 meter dash
* Madelyn Rusk, Rae’Isha Shotwell, Sarah Ingram, and Maria Mayorga were 2nd in the 400 meter relay
* Morgan Puckett, Jocelyn VanMatre, Gloria Beal, and Kristen Greenwood were 2nd in the 800 meter relay
* Allison Harness, Bentley Farris, Adrielle Smith, and Carley Greenwood were 2nd in the 1600 meter relay

* Mt. Vernon was 3rd with 84 points, just one point better than 4th place Flora with 83 points
* Carmi was 5th with 80 points and Red Hill was 6th with 51 points
Olney won five of the fourteen events with five 2nd place finishes
* Gavin Kirby, Barak Berger, Jonas Burckhartt, and Jacob Taylor won the 1600 meter relay
* Dylan Reed won the shot put
* Jonas Burckhartt won the pole vault
* Saul Jones won the 100 meter low hurdles
* Jonas Burckhartt, Dawson Brown, Brett Kocher, and Saul Jones won the 400 meter relay
* Collin Gilreath was 2nd in the 800 meter run

(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball over the weekend – the Cardinals played well
* the Redbirds won both Saturday and Sunday over Milwaukee, 4-1 and 6-4
* the Cardinals took three out of four from the Brewers and have won six out of their last seven games
with today and tonight off, the Cardinals are back at home tomorrow night hosting Toronto

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Baseball last week – OCC won two more games
* the Blue Knights beat Danville Area Community College last Wednesday, 12-2
* the Blue Knights won a GRAC game over Southeastern Illinois last Thursday, 16-8
* OCC’s GRAC doubleheader with Southwestern Illinois was rained out Saturday
the Blue Knights are now 35-7 on the year, now 15-2 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
OCC is at Wabash Valley tomorrow for a very important GRAC doubleheader
the Blue Knights have two weeks of regular season action remaining before the Region 24 Tournament

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Softball – OCC has not been in action for a few days
* the Lady Knights had a GRAC doubleheader cancelled due to rain last Friday
* the Lady Knights postponed a GRAC twin-bill at home against Southwestern Illinois Saturday
the OCC Ladies are still at 24-20 overall and 13-17 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
the Lady Knights are scheduled to host Kaskaskia today with a GRAC doubleheader at OCC
the Women’s Region 24 Tournament is scheduled to begin this coming Friday

Newton won the 13-team event by beating 2nd place Altamont, 128 to 71.5
* Paris was 3rd with 70 points, followed by Red Hill (68) and the host Maroons (59)
* Palestine-Hutsonville was 6th with 42 points, then Fairfield (29) and Mt. Carmel (23)
* Olney was 9th with 22 points, followed by Cowden-Herrick (18) and Teutopolis (15)
* the remaining teams included Lawrenceville (11) and Brownstown / St. Elmo (1.5)
the Eagles won seven of the sixteen varsity events with two 2nd place finishes
* Nick Cartright won the both the shot put and the discus throw
* Mitch Bierman won both the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash
* Joe Stone won the 800 meter run
* Mitch Bierman, Hunter Gray, Rhett Kocher, and Joe Stone won the 400 meter relay
* Mitch Bierman, Trenton Duncan, Tim Weber, and Rhett Kocher won the 800 meter relay

Evansville North won the six team event by beating 2nd place Newton, 137 to 119.5
* Mattoon was 3rd with 86 points, followed by Olney in 4th place with 47.5 points
* Lawrenceville was 5th with 29 points and Red Hill was 6th with 24 points
the host Lady Tigers won one of the fourteen varsity events with one 2nd place finish and four 4th’s
* Leah Snyder won the shot put
* Bailey Washburn, Carmen Rodriguez, Sofia Bruscantini, and Cameron Hough / 2nd in the sprint medley
* Tara Hughes was 4th in the high jump
* Sofia Bruscantini, Pandora Worrell, Chelsea Ochs, and Danni Murphy were 4th in the 800 meter medley
* Danni Murphy, Cameron Hough, Bailey Washburn, and Abby Rauch were 4th in the 1600 meter relay

the host Lady Eagles won the tournament by winning all three of their games
* Newton beat Olney in their first game, 7-2 as the Lady Eagles outhit the Lady Tigers, 7 to 4
* Newton then beat St. Anthony, 4-1 as the Lady Eagles outhit the Lady Bulldogs, 9 to 6
* Newton won their last game over Altamont, 6-4 as the Lady Eagles outhit the Lady Indians, 10 to 5
in the other remaining games played on Friday
* Olney beat Altamont, 8-5 as the Lady Tigers outhit the Lady Indians, 8 to 7
* Olney lost to St. Anthony, 6-0 as the Lady Tigers were outhit by the Lady Bulldogs, 7 to 4
Newton’s winning pitchers were Olivia Shipman, Kristen Hardiek, and Kenzi Smith
* Newton’s top hitters included Kristen Hardiek with 3 hits, 5 RBI, and 2 runs scored
* Mariah Earnest had 3 hits and 4 RBI – Olivia Shipman had 3 hits and 2 RBI
Olney’s lone winning pitcher was Sophia Colclasure
* Olney’s top hitters included Aaliyah Wease with 4 hits, 2 RBI, and 3 runs scored
* Jesika Ochs had 3 hits, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored – Maci Baker had 3 hits and 2 RBI
the 9-4 Lady Eagles are back in LIC action today hosting the 13-7 Olney Lady Tigers in Newton
