(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball last night – the Cardinals lost their third game in a row
the Redbirds fell to the visiting San Diego Padres, 12-4
here’s how the other Midwestern teams did in action last night
* those that won were the Cubs, Brewers, Royals, Twins, and Braves
* those that lost were the Pirates, Reds, White Sox, Indians, Tigers, Astros, and Rangers
the Cardinals are back in action tonight in game two of three in St. Louis against the Padres

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Cross Country yesterday at the Fairfield Invitational
the Olney Lady Tigers came away with first place as they beat 2nd place Lawrenceville, 51 to 55
* Mt. Carmel was 3rd with 92 points, followed by Hamilton County at 106 and Newton at 129
Olney’s Cameron Hough won the 3 mile girls race with a time at 23:46
* teammates Tristen Payne finished 4th, Danni Murphy was 6th, and Gracie Julian was 16th
* Olney’s other runners included Hallie Troester, Abby Rauch, and Alicia Guzman
no Newton results were available – we hope to have those in our sports report tomorrow (Thursday)
the Lady Tigers are back running next Tuesday at Olney Central College against four visiting teams

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Cross Country yesterday at the Fairfield Invitational
the Olney Tigers won the five team event by beating out 2nd place Lawrenceville, 34 to 42
* Hamilton County was 3rd with 72 points, followed by Newton at 142 and Mt. Carmel at 175
Olney’s top runner was Caleb Thomas who finished 2nd in the 3 mile race with a time of 18:18
* teammate Tyler Hughes was 2 seconds back at 18:20 in 3rd place
* Olney’s Owen Powell finished 5th and Braden Nicholson was 6th
* the other Olney runners were Collin Gilreath, Jordan Belcher, and Cole Simpson
no Newton Eagle results were available – we hope to have those in our sports report tomorrow (Thursday)
the Tigers are back on the course next Tuesday against four visiting teams at Olney Central College

 

(OLNEY)  also at the Fairfield Invitational Meet yesterday in the JV / Open Individual results
* Olney’s Felix Pajonk finished in 1st place
* Olney’s Lydia Allen was 27th in the race, but the 3rd girl overall
* other top 20 runners were Keaton Hancock, Colin Kocher, Trevor Bower, Dylan Ritter,  Rylin Kilpatrick

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Golf yesterday at the Richland Country Club
Olney held on for a four stroke victory over visiting Casey-Westfield, 192 to 196
* the Match Medalist was Casey-Westfield’s Ashton Rodgers with a low round 41
* Olney’s best round came from Zach Duenas with a 46
* Olney’s Coen McDowell and Ryan Tolliver each shot a 47, while Logan Muston had a 52
the Tigers are 1-0 in the Little Illini Conference and now 2-6 on the year
Olney is quickly back in action today as they’ll host Charleston, Teutopolis, and Fairfield at RCC

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Golf yesterday at the Richland Country Club
Robinson outshot Olney, 163 to 185 although there were only three golfers on each team
* Robinson’s Nyah Schulte had the low round at 51
* Olney’s Madeline McKinney shot a 55
* Olney’s other golfers included Abigal Nealis and Kourtney Burgener
the Lady Tiger golfers are back on the course a week from today at home against Oblong

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Softball yesterday – Jasper County lost a tough one at home
the Junior Lady Eagles lost to Teutopolis by one run, 5-4
the Jasper County girls are back in action tomorrow when they host Flora in Newton

(OLNEY)  The Guardian Center will have its fundraising Firecracker 5K Challenge on Saturday, September 2nd, in Grayville – it’s a 5 Kilometer Run / Walk with race day registration that morning from 7:00 to 7:45, followed by start time at 8:00 – the cost is $20 for all entries and t-shirts are guaranteed for all early paid registrants by August 18th – awards will be given to the top three in the various age groups – all proceeds from the Grayville Days event will benefit The Guardian Center, a non-profit organization committed to the protection & healing of physically & sexually abused children & their families – based in Carmi, with satellite offices in Robinson, Mt. (FLORA)  the 6th Annual Red & Shirley Ausbrook Memorial Scholarship Golf Scramble is this Saturday at the Flora Golf & Country Club in Charlie Brown Park at the west edge of Flora – it’s registration at 8:00, followed by a shotgun start at 9:00 and a free lunch provided afterwards – the cost is $50 per person with six person teams and mixed teams are welcome – also prizes, a raffle, and 50/50 drawing – proceeds go for scholarships for area and/or regional college students entering an emergency and/or medical field program

* in a doubleheader in Chicago – the White Sox and Twins split the two games
* those that were idle along with the Redbirds were the Cubs, Reds, Tigers, and Astros
the Cardinals open a six game home stand tonight in St. Louis with the first of three against the Padres

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Baseball yesterday
* Teutopolis beat Windsor / Stewardson-Strasburg, 13-0 in five innings

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Golf yesterday
Lawrenceville / Red Hill beat host Carmi, 158 to 170
* the Match Medalist was Carmi’s Ty Barbre with a one under round at 34

 

(NEWTON)  most all other sports was rained out with the late afternoon thunderstorms and rain
this included the Jasper County Junior High Baseball and Softball at home against Charleston

 

(OLNEY/NEWTON)  in Boys High School Soccer – the Red & Gold Invitational starts tomorrow
it’s the 21st Annual event hosted by the Charleston High School with eight teams taking part
* the Gold Pool plays tomorrow – teams include Charleston, Centralia, Teutopolis, and Mattoon
* the Red Pool plays Thursday – teams include Olney, Newton, Effingham, and Monticello
* the Gold Pool plays again Friday while the Red Pool teams play their final two matches on Saturday
there are also eight junior varsity teams participating in the Invitational event
* the Gold Pool includes Charleston, Centralia, Teutopolis, and one of two JV teams from Mattoon (A)
* the Red Pool includes Olney, Effingham Monticello, and the other JV team from Mattoon (B)

(Fraternal Order of Police) will have a fundraising Golf Outing on Sunday afternoon, September 24th, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – while sponsorships are now available for area businesses and/or individuals, teams of four players can also now sign up at a cost of $200 per team – it all begins with a pulled pork lunch at 11:30 and a shotgun start at 1:00 – registration is requested by September 8th – if any questions, call Kevin at  618-839-5922  or the Country Club in Olney

 

(OLNEY)  the annual Carle Richland Memorial Hospital Foundation Charity  Classic is set for Friday, September 22nd, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – it begins with registration and lunch at 11:00 and a shotgun start at 1:00, followed by the catered dinner served at 5:00 – there will be various prizes and more – the cost is $350 for a team of four, which includes lunch, dinner, golf carts, and golfing – plus there are $20 tickets for dinner only on sale as well – space is limited to the first 36 teams – all proceeds will benefit the Medical School Fund – for details or to sign up, call the Foundation Office at  618-395-6088

* after winning the first two games of the series, the Redbirds lost Saturday, 6-4 and last night, 6-3

the Cardinals are idle on this Monday – they’ll open a six game home stand tomorrow night in St. Louis
it’s the first of three against the San Diego Padres, then the Tampa Bay Rays are in town this weekend

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior League Football – all three Olney teams were in action this past Saturday
* Olney’s 3rd/4th grade team beat Lawrenceville, 30-22 to win their first game of the fall season
* Olney’s 5th/6th grade team lost to Salem, 28-14
* Olney’s 7th/8th grade team dropped a close one to Salem, 34-32
all three Olney teams will be back in action this Saturday at home against teams from Lawrenceville

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Baseball from Saturday – Jasper County won again on the road
the Junior Eagles beat Lawrenceville, 18-7
* the winning pitcher was Ben Meinhart
* the top hitters were Evan Schafer and Ben Meinhart, each with two hits and each with a home run
* Gage Reynolds had three hits, plus Mason Mulvey and Owen Mahaffey each had a pair of singles
the 8-0 Junior Eagles are back in action today as they’ll host Charleston in Newton

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Softball from Saturday – Jasper County split two games at home
the Junior Lady Eagles lost the first of two games to Windsor / Stewardson-Strasburg, 14-0
but the Jasper County girls came back to win the second game over Windsor / Stewardson-Strasburg, 8-3
the Junior Lady Eagles are quickly back in action today as they’ll host Charleston in Newton

(NEWTON)  in Girls Junior High Cross Country from last Thursday afternoon
Jasper County hosted its first meet of the fall season at Sam Parr State Park, northeast of Newton
* Effingham St. Anthony won the six team event by beating out 2nd place Casey-Westfield, 50 to 57
* the host Junior Lady Eagles finished two points back, in 3rd place, with 59 points
* Paris Mayo was 4th at 115, then Effingham at 123 and Okaw Valley at 137
with a total of seventeen runners, here’s the top finishers for Jasper County
* Cierrah Utley, Rylea Borgic, Alexis Hetzer, Taylor Slough, April Howard, and Macy Barthlemey
the Jasper County girls are back on the course tomorrow on the road at Teutopolis

 

(NEWTON)  in Boys Junior High Cross Country from last Thursday afternoon
Jasper County hosted its first meet of the fall season at Sam Parr State Park, northeast of Newton
* St. Anthony won the eight team event by beating out 2nd place Cowden-Herrick / Beecher City, 31 to 81
* the host Junior Eagles finished in 3rd place with 98 points, followed by Casey-Westfield at 112
* Effingham was 5th at 114, followed by Okaw Valley at 144, Paris Mayo at 145, and Teutopolis at 195
with only seven runners, due to four others playing baseball, here’s the top Jasper County runners
* Clay Bergbower, Luke Weber, Brock Probst, Caden Nichols, Ian Fehrenbacher, and Isaac Flowers
the Jasper County boys are back on the course tomorrow on the road at Teutopolis

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Tennis Saturday at the Champaign Centennial Invitational
there were sixteen total teams that participated in the annual sports event
* Belleville East won by beating out 2nd place Wheaton Warrenville South - O'Fallon was 3rd
* Warren Township and Lincoln Way East tied for 4th, followed by Belleville West in 6th place
* Effingham St. Anthony was 7th, with The Latin School 8th and Hinsdale South 9th
* host Champaign Centennial was 10th, Danville was 11th, Teutopolis and Champaign Central tied for 12th
* Conant High and Galesburg tied for 14th, while Urbana High finished 16th

(NEWTON/OLNEY)  it was a busy Friday night with high school sports being highlighted in the area
a huge “thank you” goes out to all the local fans and supporters who turned out for various events last night
* to the “Meet the Tigers” event at Richland County High School in Olney
* to the “Media Day” event at Newton Community High School
as all the athletes, coaches, sponsors, and volunteers were recognized in all the fall sports and activities
all of the high school fall sports in Olney and Newton will begin their fall schedules this upcoming week

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior League Football – all three Olney teams are in action on this Saturday
* the 3rd/4th grade team kicks off its season by traveling to Lawrenceville for a 12 noon start this afternoon
* the 5th/6th grade team will host Salem this evening at the RCHS Athletic Field with game time at 5:00
* the 7th/8th grade team will also host Salem tonight after the first game, with start time at around 7:15

the Junior Eagles slipped by visiting North Clay, 9-8
* the winning pitcher was Owen Mahaffey
* the top hitters were Ben Meinhart with a double & single and Weston Tharp with a pair of singles
the 6-0 Jasper County boys are quickly back in action today as they travel to Oblong

* the 3rd/4th grade team kicks off its season by traveling to Lawrenceville for a 12:00 noon start
* the 5th/6th grade team will host Salem tomorrow evening at the RCHS Athletic Field - game time at 5:00
* the 7th/8th grade team will also host Salem tomorrow night after the first game at around 7:15
everyone’s encouraged to get out and support the Olney Junior League Football teams at home or away

(OLNEY)  the 2017 Olney Bicycle Classic is Saturday, September 9th, in downtown Olney – it starts with the Richland County Challenge Ride at 8:00 that morning, with registration required by 7:45 – then the free TrustBank Family Ride begins at 9:30 with registration by 9:15 – the Kids Races for those ages 2 to 14 will start at 11:00 with registration required for all events by 10:45 – and the Pacific Cycle Stunt Show will finish things up at 12:15, plus Pacific Cycle employees will be on hand to do basic bike safety checks – concessions provided by the OCC Student Senate, plus free event t-shirts available for all participants – for details or for registration forms, logon at  www.olneychamber.com  or call the Chamber office at  392-2241

 

(OLNEY)  The Guardian Center will have its fundraising Firecracker 5K Challenge on Saturday, September 2nd, in Grayville – it’s a 5 Kilometer Run / Walk with race day registration that morning from 7:00 to 7:45, followed by start time at 8:00 – the cost is $20 for all entries and t-shirts are guaranteed for all early paid registrants by August 18th – awards will be given to the top three in the various age groups – all proceeds from the Grayville Days event will benefit The Guardian Center, a non-profit organization committed to the protection & healing of physically & sexually abused children & their families – based in Carmi, with satellite offices in Robinson, Mt. (OLNEY)  the Richland County High School Marching Tiger Color Guard will have a fundraising “car wash” tomorrow at Wood’s Auto Body, along South Route 130, in Olney – that’s from 10:00 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon – the cost is a simple money donation – please stop by and help out

 

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Soccer League sign up is tomorrow morning from 9:00 to 11:00 at Olney Central College – that’s in the parking lot area between the soccer fields and the OCC Gym – it’s for all Richland County kids, Kindergarten thru 8th Grade – again, that’s soccer sign up this Saturday morning

(NEWTON)  the Newton Community High School and its Athletic Club invites everyone to the annual Media Day event at NCHS coming up tonight – the Marching Eagles’ pre-game show will kick things off at 6:00 on Chizevsky Field, with the Athletic Boosters and all the athletes, coaches, and volunteers to be recognized in each of the fall sports and activities – concessions will be available and everyone’s invited
