(NEWTON) The Newton City Council met in regular session earlier this week on Tuesday night. The Council : agreed to spend $11,720 in TIF funds to have Frohning Brothers Inc. for the construction project at the Retention Pond in Five Aprils Subdivision : agreed to seek bids online at govdeals.com for a 2012 Dodge Charger : agreed to spend $2,985 with Merz to bury the gas line on the east side of the Newton City Hall : approved a $6,682 demolition reimbursement application submitted for 501 West End Avenue : agreed to authorize the TIF application submitted for 8787 Commercial Avenue for 15% of the total project cost up to the amount of $68,355 to be reimbursed yearly based on the incremental tax increase after completion of the project : approved the $2,500 dumpster reimbursement application submitted for 801 West Jourdan Street : approved the $11,500 quote from Nussmeyer Tree Service to remove two trees in the open alley running north/south behind 405 & 407 South Walnut Street : agreed to continue the process for a State DNR Flood Hazard Mitigation Grant : approved the Special Event Application submitted by the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce for Scare on the Square Trick or Treat event to be held on the Newton Square on Saturday, October 18th, from 1:00 to 5:00 : approved the Special Event Application from the First Baptist Church for a Trunk or Treat event to be held at the church with the south alley & west alley closed from 5:30 to 9:30 on Halloween Night, Friday, October 31st : and after an hour long closed session, the Council adjourned : the Newton City Council will have its next regular meeting October 21st, 2025.
