(NEWTON/OLNEY) The 2025 Illinois spring trout fishing season is nearly three weeks away, set to open up early Saturday morning, April 5th, at 58 different lakes, ponds, & streams around the state. The State DNR stocks more than 80,000 rainbow trout prior to the spring fishing, with an additional 80,000 stocked for the fall trout season as well, which begins in October. With eight sites available here in our downstate area, all anglers must have a valid fishing license and an inland trout stamp unless they are younger than 16, blind or disabled, or are an Illinois resident on leave from active duty in the Armed Forces. For details on this and other state fishing opportunities, go to the ifishillinois.org website.
