(SPRINGFIELD) The WalletHub Survey of the Safest States in America has been released and Illinois netted a 50.01 total score, which is 36th worst overall in the nation. Researchers dissected 52 key indicators across five categories as part of an analysis where Illinois was 36th in emergency preparedness, 31st in personal and residential safety, 24th in workplace safety, and 19th in road safety rank. In response, several lawmakers are viewing the ranking as indisputable evidence of how the state has become its own worst enemy in many ways.

(QUINCY) Governor J.B. Pritzker has announced the investment of nearly $300 million in taxpayer funds for a new Veterans home in Quincy, despite the state and its Department of Veterans Affairs mismanaging the past facility, as well as several other state agencies. The ribbon-cutting for the new facility yesterday noted the renovation and rehabilitation project will provide long-term care for 210 residents and an independent living wing for 88 residents. Seven previously used buildings were demolished as part of the project, which will also include work on existing infrastructure, utilities, and landscaping.

(BELLEVILLE) A bipartisan group of elected officials are applauding a new round of state grants to help police crack down on auto thefts and carjackings around the state. The Illinois Secretary of State’s office has announced more than $11 million in new grants at a press conference yesterday in Belleville. According to the office, carjackings in Chicago dropped from a high of over 1,800 back in 2021, to just 379 reported so far this year.

(CHICAGO) Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy David Gates is now also the President of the Illinois Federation of Teachers. Union delegates elected Gates to replace outgoing President Dan Montgomery last Saturday. The IFT is planning a statewide lobby day and press conference in Springfield October 29th, the second-to-last day of the Illinois General Assembly’s fall veto session at the State Capitol.
