(NEWTON) The Newton City Council met in regular session this past Tuesday night. The Council : agreed to authorize the city’s final project for the Energy Transition Community Grant application with the funds to finish the pickleball courts at Peterson Park and to help paint the pool at the Newton Aquatic Center – the Council hosted a public stakeholders meeting for the grant prior to its regular meeting : in other business, approved the annual Tax Levy as presented : approved the Abatement Certificate for the city’s Aquatic Center facility : agreed to proceed with vacating the alley running north & south from Reynolds Street to Curtis Street, between Stevens Street & Walnut Street, in the Anna Stevens Subdivision : agreed to proceed with vacating the alley running east & west between lots 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11, plus lots 6 and 12, in the Anna Stevens Subdivision : approved a Special Event Application submitted by the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce for its annual Christmas on the Square Festival and Parade set for Saturday afternoon and evening, December 13th, 2025, from 2:00 to 8:00, with the Parade starting at 6:00 : and then adjourned after a 36-minute executive session to discuss litigation, real estate, and personnel : the next meeting for the Newton City Council is December 16th, 2025.
