(SPRINGFIELD) While many downstate Republicans want to take action on school choice scholarship legislation, Illinois Democrats say they don’t have enough support to bring the topic up for a vote. Starting in 2027, private donations of up to $1,700 for school choice scholarships will be eligible for 100% federal tax credits, and while each state has the choice to opt in, it appears State Democratic leaders say they do not have enough votes. With 60 total votes needed to pass the Illinois House, the 40 Republican votes fall far short and many of the 78 Democrats seem to be against the school choice plan, although their constituents seem to disagree.

(CHICAGO) A nonprofit law firm, the Becket Group, has filed an amicus brief urging a federal appeals court to stop Illinois from forcing pro-life healthcare professionals to promote and make referrals for abortion. It was this past Tuesday that Becket filed the brief on behalf of the Catholic Bishops of Illinois, as well as other Catholic and Orthodox groups. The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, a group of pro-life doctors and pregnancy centers and doctors are challenging the Illinois law, saying healthcare professionals have the right to say no.

(SPRINGFIELD) The State Attorney General’s office yesterday announced a $4.25 million multistate settlement with home improvement retail chain Menards. The bipartisan settlement resolves claims that the company deceptively marketed its merchandise credit check program, commonly known as the Menards 11% Rebate Program. With Illinois receiving $946,634 as its share, the other Midwestern states involved are Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, & Ohio.

(SPRINGFIELD) Illinois residents now have until December 31st to enroll in health insurance coverage that begins January 1st. This year marks Get Covered Illinois’ first Open Enrollment Period operating a state-based marketplace independent of the federally run HealthCare.gov. Folks can explore plans, apply for financial help, and enroll at GetCoveredIllinois.gov.
