LATEST NATIONAL NEWS DEALING WITH HPAI

(SPRINGFIELD) Detections of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) rose sharply in January and February earlier this year, with 15.5 million birds affected nationwide. While this is substantial, it is 56% fewer birds than at the same time last year in 2025. With detections lower last month in March, reflecting progress in managing the new outbreak, U.S. egg prices subsequently eased 57% so far this year compared to last year’s high. However, as spring migration season takes flight, the USDA is urging farmers to be vigilant with biosecurity since HPAI is being detected in both wild birds and domestic poultry flocks across the nation, increasing the risk of exposure. USDA biosecurity assessments provide poultry and egg farmers with resources to protect flocks and safeguard food supply. For more, logon at aphis.usda.gov.
