(NEWTON) The Newton City Council met in regular session a week ago tonight. The Council : approved the payment of all bills as presented – $227,155 in accounts payable and $71,875 in pre-paid bills : on a 5 to 1 vote, approved pay estimate #1 to B & T Drainage for the Watermain Replacement Project on East Reynolds Street worth $205,545 : on a 5 to 1 vote, approved the $143,050 bid from BH Electric for the City’s Electric Line D Installation Project : agreed to a water chlorine generator worth $41,377 : on a 5 to 1 vote, approved $40,562 bill from Stone & Waggoner for the Watermain Replacement Project on East Reynolds Street : on a 5 to 1 vote, approved the TIF Application submitted for 202 Museum Drive for 50% of the total project cost, up to $4,788 : approved a TIF Application submitted for 1107 South Van Buren Street for 50% of the total project cost, up to $5,000 : approved a TIF Application submitted for 307 West Jourdan Street for 50% of the total project cost, up to $5,000 : approved the City’s MFT Street Maintenance Program and approved the estimate of maintenance supplies cost : approved the City’s 2026-2027 Fiscal Year Budget, along with the City’s Fiscal Year Insurance and Specials Budget : on a 4 to 2 vote, approved five Interfund Loans to offset the shortfall from levied funds to be paid back with interest : approved a letter of intent between the City of Newton and IDOT for the Routes 33/130 Resurfacing Project : approved the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Newton and the Laborers’ International Union of North America and the Downstate Illinois Laborers’ Local 1197 : approved the $16,900 56-day rental of a backyard digger by the Electric Department : approved the $3,968 cost for transformer oil sampling materials & laboratory analysis : and took no further action, other to adjourn after a 15-minute closed session to discuss litigation : next Newton City Council regular meeting will be May 5th, 2026.
