(NEWTON) The Newton City Council met in regular session on Tuesday night, The board approved the regular minutes from the month of May, took public comments and discussed old and new business including approving a $23,900 project change order for the Electric Line D Grid Resilience Grant and passed Ordinance 26-05 creating incentives for the demolition of dangerous and dilapidated buildings. The council also accepted a resignation effective June 2, 2026, appointed a new Wastewater Plant Operator Department Head effective May 28, 2026, and authorized advertising to fill both Water and Wastewater Plant Operator positions. In addition, members approved a one-year extension to begin construction on Lot 18 in the Five Aprils Subdivision, approved a TIF application for up to $5,000 for property on South Lafayette Street, and authorized a special event application submitted by the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce for the End of an Era on the Square Community block party on Friday, June 19, 2026 from 5-9 pm. The councilthen met in executive session for 39 minutes to discuss personnel and potential litigation. The next regular council meeting is June 16th.
