‘WHAT’S HAPPENING’ THIS WEEKEND

(OLNEY) The Olney VFW will have its next Queen of Hearts drawing, all open to the public, at 4:00 this Sunday afternoon. The jackpot is now up to $8,238 if the winner is present, and remember, the drawing is live-streamed on the VFW Post page on Facebook. Tickets are on sale right up until draw time at 4:00 Sunday, with the VFW Post doors opening at 1:00.

(NOBLE) The Cornerstone Community Church in Noble will host a special presentation at it’s 10:00 service this coming Sunday morning, August 25th. The guest speaker will be Joel Tay with the presentation “Creation : Impacting Our Culture” answering many questions. All are invited out this Sunday morning to the Cornerstone Community Church in Noble.

(CLAREMONT) The Claremont Community Center will be hosting its Annual Chowder this Saturday afternoon with serving to start at 4:00. With the cost at $20.00 per gallon, folks need to bring their own containers, but no glass. Whole pies will also be available for sale. That’s all at the Claremont Community Building this coming Saturday afternoon at 4:00.

(NEWTON) The Jasper County Highway Department is hosting its next free “Electronic Recycling Event” for Jasper County residents only tomorrow, from 7:00 to 1:30, or until the trailer is filled. That’s all at the Highway Department Garage, just off of Illinois Route 33, northeast of Newton. Items accepted include

computers & small scale servers, cable boxes, monitors, keyboards, mice, TV’s, printers, DVD players & recorders, VCR’s, and more.

(NEWTON) The 2nd Annual “Geiger Memorial Run” is tomorrow with registration of all jeeps, classic cars, trucks, motorcycles, and all other vehicles starting at 11:00 at HiBenders, with the Memorial Run leaving at high noon (12:00) with all planned stops to be announced on Saturday. It’s back to HiBenders with a food truck on site, live music with Flat Mountain from 5:00 to 9:00, and more. Participants must be age 21 or older. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Multiple Sclerosis at a local site. All are invited out this Saturday.

(OLNEY) The East Fork Arena, just north of the East Fork Lake Dam, at the north edge of Olney, will be busy tomorrow from 8:00 to 3:00 for the rescheduled 9th Annual White Squirrel Saddle Club’s 2024 Tractor Show and Truck & Jeep Show. With Tractor registration from 8:00 to 10:00 Saturday morning and Truck & Jeep signup from 9:00 to 11:00, the judging is at 12 noon with various categories and the awards & dash plaques announced at 12:30. Admission is only $2 per person, free for those age 12& younger. There will also be a skillet throw & fan belt toss at 10:00, auction at 11:00, pedal tractor pull at 1:00, and tractor games at 2:00, concluded by a Tractor Parade. Plus plenty of concessions, a huge bouncy inflatable green tractor with grain cart obstacle, various vendors, and bring your lawn chairs for the live Outdoor Classrooms, featuring a U of I Extension garden to pantry program, a petting zoo, and information about beekeeping & Christian homeschooling. All ages welcome.

(OLNEY) The Calvary Baptist Church will be selling Greathouse Grazing Acre BBQ pork burgers tomorrow from 10:00 to 2:00 in the church parking lot, at 430 East Mack Avenue. All are invited to stop by for some great sandwiches, all to benefit a great cause Saturday.

(NEWTON) This weekend’s “Smoke Off” barbecue competition is set to be held at the Jasper County Fairgrounds in Newton, sponsored by the American Legion Post 20 in Newton, starting later today with the beer garden opening at 4:00, the Shriners serving up pork burgers, brats, & hot dogs, and music by Quarter Annie at 6:30 tonight, plus the Legion’s Queen of Hearts drawing at 6:30 on the fairgrounds. Then tomorrow includes free biscuits & gravy from 8:00 to 9:30, various vendors from 9:00 to 3:00, a Motorcycle, Truck, and Car Show from 9:00 to 2:00 with awards presented at 2:00, a beer garden, kids wiffle ball, Randy Kimme & The Thunder Road Band from 12:00 to 4:00, a kids pork steak BBQ competition at 2:00, an Armed Forces Museum on display, and plenty of cold drinks available for purchase. The main feature will be the sampling of barbequed ribs, wings, & pork butt from each competition team starting at 12:00 noon with the purchase of wristbands at $10.00 per person, all followed by the BBQ awards presented at 4:00 with trophies and cash prizes, including the Grand Champion & Reserve Grand Champion with first through fifth places awarded in all three categories. That’s all this weekend, the BBQ “Smoke Out” in Newton.

(OLNEY) The Richland County Farmer’s Market is today from 10:00 to 2:00 under the pole barns in the Olney City Park. Expect farm fresh produce and more on sale for the public.
