ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (11/19/2024)

(SPRINGFIELD) As President-elect Donald Trump is exploring plans to declare a national emergency to begin deportation operations, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker is proclaiming the move would be unconstitutional and illegal, despite the fact that the non-citizens are in our state and country illegally. Illinois has received nearly 50,000 illegal immigrants since August 2022, costing statewide taxpayers more than $1 billion for free food, shelter, health care, education, and legal services. By the way, statewide lawmakers are back in the State Capitol today to finish out the 2024 fall veto session this week, with no action expected.

(SPRINGFIELD) The November 5th General Election was two weeks ago today, but Illinois continues to count vote-by-mail ballots. An election integrity group, Illinois Conservative Union, says a recent federal appeals court ruling will likely result in states, like Illinois, not counting mail-in ballots that were cast and postmarked by Election Day, but arrive five days later. Many believe this will end up with the U.S. Supreme Court, probably before the 2026 midterms. While states have the right to set the time, place, & manner of an election, the U.S. Constitution’s elections clause designates a one-day Election Day for America.

(SPRINGFIELD) A federal judge has tossed out of court a lawsuit using Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act, saying a recent change in state law is retroactive, making the case outside of the threshold for the federal judiciary. Illinois passed the BIPA back in 2008, prohibiting the unauthorized use of an individual’s biometric data, like fingerprints, plus clarifications were recently approved restricting the amount of penalties for violations.
