HAWK IN EFFINGHAM COUNTY TESTED POSITIVE FOR AVIAN INFLUENZA

(EFFINGHAM) Effingham County authorities are alerting the public that a wild bird there tested positive for the Avian Flu last week. The Effingham County Health Department had a hawk tested at the University of Illinois and after the positive Avian Flu confirmation, the Health Department is assuring the region that while the public health risk is low, it and other area health offices will continue to monitor the situation. Meanwhile, the Illinois Department of Public Health is encouraging everyone, regardless of where they live, to avoid direct contact with wild birds and do not handle or capture waterfowl or other wild birds that appear to be sick.
