WEST NILE VIRUS DETECTED IN JASPER COUNTY

(NEWTON) The West Nile virus has been detected in Jasper County as the positive pool mosquito batch was collected this past Wednesday. The Jasper County Health Department has been monitoring mosquito populations for the past two months in order to manage the risks of West Nile virus. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and take precautions to protect themselves and their families while outdoors, including the use of insect repellent containing DEET, by wearing long sleeves & pants, & by taking steps to eliminate standing or stagnant water where mosquitoes breed around the house and/or farm. The West Nile virus spreads through mosquito bites after the mosquitoes have fed on infected birds.
