BEEF INVENTORY AND PRICES ARE A CONCERN

(BLOOMINGTON) Tyson Foods, the nation’s largest meatpacker, recently announced plans to close a beef processing plant in Nebraska in early 2026, plus also announced plans to reduce operations to one shift at a facility in Texas. The moves are reportedly due to ongoing losses in the company’s beef division as it deals with the historically small U.S. cattle herd, which subsequently created lower-than-capacity operations at some beef plants throughout the U.S. Officials say the impacts of the tight cattle numbers are being felt at every stage of the beef supply chain as retail beef prices are averaging at 60 cents higher per pound from a year ago. The USDA plans to release its latest, biannual cattle inventory report later this month.
