COST OF A SUMMER COOKOUT UP 5%

(BLOOMINGTON) The cost of a summer cookout continues to climb with inflation and still supply chain disruptions driving grocery store prices. The American Farm Bureau’s annual marketbasket survey reports an Independence Day cookout will cost an average $71.22 for ten people this year, a 5% jump from last year at $7.12 per person. The cost is up nearly 30% from five years ago and is a record high since the AFBF began the survey in 2013. The food favorites include a dozen items, such as cheeseburgers, chicken breasts, pork chops, homemade potato salad, strawberries, and ice cream, among other products. While ground beef saw the highest price increase, there were drops in the cost of chicken breasts and potato salad. Illinois’ cookout cost is 37 cents higher than the national average at $71.59.
