HIGHLIGHTS FROM MOST RECENT MEETING

(NEWTON) At the last Newton City Council meeting, the Council : on a 4 to 1 vote, approved the $35,000 purchase of a 2023 Dodge Durango SUV for the Newton Police Department : approved the $124,015 invoice from JB Esker & Sons for work completed at the pickleball courts in Peterson Park : approved the $900 estimate for Craford Guttering to fix the guttering issues at the Newton City Hall : approved the Cobra/IMRF’s continuation of rates for the City, effective March 1st, 2026, to February 28th, 2027 : approved the $6,973 estimate to the City’s Electric Department for Smithenry Trenching to remove the sidewalk and lamp post base, with replacement, on the corner of North Jackson Street and Route 33, with the cost to be reimbursed by insurance : approved the $16,505 purchase of a new street light for that same location, also to be reimbursed by insurance : noted the extra work by City employees in clearing the recent snow : and took no action other than to adjourn after a 36-minute closed session to discuss real estate and personnel : the next regular meeting for the Newton City Council will be Tuesday night, February 17th, 2026.
