ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (02/05/2025)

(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois Department of Revenue is encouraging eligibly taxpayers to take advantage of savings offered by tax credits when filing their 2024 income tax returns. While the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit is a benefit for working people with low to moderate income, the Illinois Child Tax Credit, new this year, is for qualified taxpayers who have at least one child that is their dependent and under the age of 12 years old. (SPRINGFIELD) Several state lawmakers are pushing a new proposal in Springfield dealing with parents and their children’s medications. Officials say the bill would require doctors to provide parents with printed FDA Medication Guides before prescribing psychotropic drugs to children. Under the proposed legislation, parents must be given the opportunity to sign an informed consent form before any prescription can be issued to their child.

(CHICAGO) Doctors at Northwestern Medicine, affiliated with Northwestern University in Evanston, has announced that medical innovations in 2024 have helped them achieve two milestones. The physcians at the Chicago-area facility performed a record 148 transplants last year, the largest number of lung transplants in a single year. Also, the facility and the transplant program has reduced the median wait time for a procedure to only four days.

(SPRINGFEILD) Preparations are underway for Illinois to join in the nation’s celebration of 250 years on independence, coming up in 2026. The Illinois American 250 Commission is urging folks across the Land of Lincoln to get involved in planning festivities & educational opportunities to mark the historic moment, especially local libraries, schools, historical societies & foundations, communities, churches, and individuals. Celebrations marking the nation’s independence are expected to take place in early 2026 cumminating on July 4th.
