ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (05/30/2024)

(CHICAGO) Democrats intend to formally nominate President Joe Biden as their party’s nominee by using a virtual roll call weeks before their August convention in Chicago, a move to minimize possible protests during the event. It is also an attempt to get on the Ohio ballot ahead of an August 7th deadline for certifying candidates there. The Democratic National Committee says the virtual process will enable the Biden/Harris ticket to receive their party’s formal nomination much like 2020 during the pandemic.

(SPRINGFIELD) Utility regulators at the Illinois Commerce Commission will announce their final decision in the Peoples Gas rate case today, on this Thursday. If the ICC approves a draft order issued by an administrative judge, Peoples Gas will get a $7.9 million rate increase. Critics of the utility’s request, including State Attorney General Kwame Raoul and the Illinois Public Interest Research Group, is promoting a smaller increase or none at all.

(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois Supreme Court and its Board of Admissions, have announced that law school graduates will take a new bar exam starting four years from now, in 2028, to become licensed to practice law in Illinois. While 18 other jurisdictions are also making the change, the NextGen bar exam will replace the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE), which Illinois has used since 2019. Illinois will continue to offer the bar exam twice a year, in February & July.

(MADISON) The NASCAR circuit pays a visit to Illinois’ Metro East area this weekend as tens of thousands of race fans are expected to gather at the World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, not only for the Enjoy Illinois 300 Sunday afternoon, but also for several NASCAR-themed events on Saturday and Sunday, including music concerts, plenty of food, and more.
