(Springfield) The final day of the fall veto session for the Illinois General Assembly is today and it is the last chance to address some looming deadlines. A major focus for many is extending the Invest on Kids School Choice Scholarship Program before it expires December 31st, 2023 as there were hundreds of people in favor of the program at the statehouse yesterday. A separate issue impacts firearm owners and the gun ban registration deadline of January 1st. Once the lawmakers adjourn, they will not return to Springfield until sometime in January.
(Springfield) In action yesterday, the State Senate approved a measure aimed at making Illinois government passenger vehicles zero-emission or converted to zero-emission by the year 2030. While this would not include police and fire vehicles, the main concern for many is the cost to taxpayers. The bill now heads to the Governor’s desk for his consideration.
(Springfield) Also yesterday, a bill that would lift a moratorium on a new nuclear reactors in Illinois passed in the State Senate. The legislation would end the 1987 prohibition on new nuclear operations in favor of allowing smaller modular reactors. The new measure was approved instead of seeking a vote to override the Governor’s veto of an earlier bill.
(Springfield ) A new study dhows that Illinois saw a sharp increase in car crash fatalities from 2012 to 2021. According to the study by the Atlanta-based law firm John Foy and Associates, Illinois had a just over 37% increase in deaths from automobile accidents, the third largest jump in the nation. Only Indiana and Oregon saw larger fatality increases.
