ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (11/22/2023)

(SPRINGFIELD) A federal district judge expects to issue a ruling in the case challenging Illinois’ gun ban registry before the January 1st deadline kicks in. In fact, court officials say a ruling is expected “quickly” after the oral arguments, which are set to be heard in less than three weeks, on Tuesday, December 12th. Many downstate lawmakers and other opponents of the gun ban say if the registration is not blocked, law-abiding gun owners could become criminals overnight. The registry, that opened October 1st with emergency rules, has had very little response from the over 2.4 million FOID cardholders in Illinois.

(SPRINGFIELD) A new report finds a connection between high tax states and population loss. The IRS data shows that between 2020 and 2021, Illinois, with the second highest property taxes in America, experienced the third highest outmigration in the nation, losing nearly 54,000 residents on net. While Governor J.B. Pritzker continues to deny that people are leaving Illinois, most all lawmakers are aware of the real numbers. 26 of the 50 states experienced a net gain of income tax filers, led by Florida, Texas, and North Carolina. The report found that 8 of the top 10 states that gained population either forgo individual income taxes on wages and salary income or have or are moving towards a flat income tax.

(SPRINGFIELD) For the second time in as many months, a CO2 pipeline company has withdrawn an application to run a pipeline through Illinois. It was earlier this week that Wolf Carbon Solutions filed a motion with the Illinois Commerce Commission to give up on its pipeline that had plans to run through at least nine state counties. It was last month that Navigator CO2 Ventures withdrew its application for its now cancelled project.
