IN AREA EVENTS THIS WEEKEND (05/24/2024)

(OLNEY) The Richland County Homemakers Education Association will host a presentation on hanging potted plants next Wednesday, May 29th, at the Extension Office meeting room in Olney, with registration at 5:00 and start time at 5:30. Local Food Systems & Small Farms Educator Katie Bell will discuss various aspects of hanging plants, plus demonstrate with three baskets that will be given away as door prizes. Preregistration is not required. The meeting is free and open to the public, so bring a friend & check it out.

(NEWTON) A special workshop is scheduled for next Tuesday evening to be held at the Scott Avenue Christian Church in Newton, starting at 6:00, sponsored by the Jasper County Home & Community Education Association. The guest speaker, Faith Smith, LPC, will present information to those in attendance learning more about our children’s mental health. Refreshments will be provided. Those interested should RSVP by calling the Jasper County Extension Office in Newton at 618-783-2521.

(OLNEY) The next meeting of the Richland County TB Board will be next Tuesday evening (5/28) at the TB & Public Health Office on Whittle Avenue in Olney, starting at 6:00.

(OLNEY) There’s a winner every weekend at the Olney VFW with its next Queen of Hearts drawing, all open to the public, at 4:00 this Sunday afternoon. Following a $10 winner this past weekend, the jackpot is now up to $4,476, if the winner is present, or half that amount if not, plus smaller possible card winners as well. And remember, the drawing is live-streamed on the VFW Post page on Facebook. Tickets are now on sale right up until draw time. Stop by for tickets at North Walnut Street or call the VFW at 618-392-4226.

(OLNEY) The Olney VFW will have its annual Buddy Poppy Drive tomorrow at three sites in Olney. From 10:00 to 2:00 at the Main Street/East Street intersection, at the Rural King Store, and at the Walmart Supercenter. Folks are urged to give a donation in exchange for a Buddy Poppy with the funds raised to support local Veterans and their families.

(OLNEY) A reminder that the Musgrove Aquatic Center in Olney will open for the 2024 season tomorrow with a “free swim day” and regular hours of operation.

(NEWTON) It’s another Queen of Hearts drawing this Friday night at 6:30 at the American Legion Post 20 in Newton with tickets on sale up until draw time and a jackpot at $8,705. The Queen’s Menu includes your choice, a ribeye sandwich with a side for $12 or six wings & a side for $10 with serving to start at 5:00. Plus, the Midnight Express Band performing at 6:30. (OLNEY) The Richland County Farmer’s Market is today from 10:00 to 2:00 under the pole barns in the Olney City Park. Expect farm fresh produce and more on sale for the public.
