NEW WORLD SCREWWORM BEING MONITORED

(SPRINGFIELD) The first human case of New World Screwworm (NWS) has been confirmed in a Maryland man who recently returned from a trip to El Salvador. While CDC officials say the risk to public health in America from this NWS introduction is very low, many livestock groups and producers remained concerned about the U.S. cattle herd and its protection. The USDA recently announced the future construction of a $750 million facility in Texas that will produce thousands of sterile NWS flies to help fight off and kill the NWS pests.
