NEWS FROM AROUND ILLINOIS

(SPRINGFIELD) The National Federation of Independent Business Small Business Optimism Index dropped six-tenths (0.6%) of a percentage point in October, but the NFIB’s Uncertainty Index fell 12 full points to its lowest level this year. NFIB officials say even though Main Street uncertainty declined, small business owners are struggling to find qualified workers. Experts say Illinois must pursue policies that urge investment in the state’s hometown communities.

(SPRINGFIELD) Illinois remains the only state that has not reformed its property tax sale system after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that governments cannot keep more that what’s owed in back taxes, a delay that’s now fueling lawsuits and could cost taxpayers millions of dollars. The Illinois Policy Institute says if Illinois residents fall behind on their property taxes, even by a few hundred dollars, that debt can be sold to private investors who, if not repaid with interest, can take the homeowner’s entire property. If lawmakers fail to act soon, counties throughout the state could face millions in claims, potentially leaving taxpayers and homeowners on the hook.

(SPRINGFIELD) During National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month this November, the office of the Illinois State Fire Marshall is urging residents to recognize the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning, which claims hundreds of lives and sickens thousands each year across the nation. In 2024, Illinois fire departments responded to 9,860 statewide carbon monoxide (CO) related calls. In Illinois over the past decade, an average of 20 people per year have died from accidental CO poisoning. Residents must take time to check or install CO detectors.
