NEWTON CITY COUNCIL MEETING RECAP (03/07/2024)

(NEWTON) The Newton City Council met in regular session earlier this week on Tuesday night. The Council : approved a Grant Writing Services Agreement with South Central Illinois Regional Planning & Development for the Energy Transition Community Grant FY 2024 funding : agreed to open the City’s Yard Waste Facility on the first and third Saturdays beginning April 6th, 2024, and running through October 19th, 2024, from 8:00 to 12:00 noon – plus every Saturday in November, all under the landscape waste collection site rules : agreed to hire two additional summer time employees for the City of Newton : agreed to transfer a Sewer Department employee to the Park Department, effective May 1st, 2024 : agreed to begin the hiring process to add an employee to the City’s Water Department : approved a wage increase for workers at the Newton Aquatic Center : approved a Sublease Agreement with the St. Thomas Parish increasing payments for water wells : and approved two Special Event Applications – for a Pre-Eclipse Party in front of Rauch’s Jewelry on April 5th from 4:00 to 7:00pm and for the Newton Junior Women’s Club 5K Fun Run/Walk on May 18th from 7:30 to 10:00 that morning in Peterson Park : next meeting is March 19th, 2024.
