ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (06/17/2025)

(SPRINGFIELD) Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker took time yesterday to sign the 2026 State Budget, the largest spending plan in Illinois history, worth $55.2 billion, approved late last month along party lines in the State Capitol. Seven other bills were also signed into law, one of which creates due process for people denied their firearm privileges, although those against the law say it’s not realy due process to administratively take away 2nd Amendment rights. Another new law delays the effective date of prohibiting banking institutions from charging debit and credit card fees on transactions involving taxes and tips.

(CHICAGO) The U.S. Marshalls Service has announced that law enforcement officers have safely recovered a child who’s been missing for at least four years. The Illinois Department of Children & Family Services first reported the one year old infant missing in 2021 as the child’s biological mother had an extradition warrant from California and was also reported missing. But earlier this month, Chicago Police joined U.S. Marshalls to arrest the mother at a Chicago residence and returned the now 5 year old child to DCFS in healthy condition.

(SPRINGFIELD) Anyone spotting wild turkeys are being asked to count them and report them to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. In fact, the State DNR has set up a wild turkey survey online, or reports can be returned through a postcard provided by the State DNR. Observers are asked to look for young turkeys, female & male turkeys, the time time they’re seen, and more now thru August. Learn more on the dnr.illinois.gov website.

(CHICAGO) Motorists in Chicago will start to see street closings this week in preparation for NASCAR street races in the Windy City. The Chicago Tribune reports an accelerated setup and breakdown is meant to reduce frustrations for all drivers. The next set of street races for NASCAR is set for the first weekend next month, July 5th and 6th.
