(SPRINGFIELD) Detections of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in poultry decreased nationwide in April as only 62,000 birds were impacted by HPAI, which is down significantly from 11.4 million birds from the month before in February, according to the USDA. While HPAI cases historically rise during wild bird migration in the spring, usually March through May, and again during fall migration, there have been only six cases of HPAI in Illinois so far this year. However, commercial and backyard poultry producers are strongly encouraged to stay vigilant in their HPAI monitoring. To review biosecurity tips and more, go to the aphis.usda.gov website.
