(OLNEY) The local 5th Grade Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Olney Rotary Club, was held this past Monday night at the Richland County Elementary School in Olney. Of the 29 students from the Elementary School and St. Joseph School who qualified for the spelling bee, all based on the results of a spelling bee test administered in all 5th grade classrooms, there were 21 students that participated Monday night. Congratulations to Aviana Newwell who won the competition, Carter Kermicle in second place, and Granger Ginder in third place, all from the Elementary School. 

(OLNEY) All are invited to a local Raised Bed Gardening Workshop coming up on Saturday morning, May 2nd, from 9:00 to 10:00, at the West Salem Community Garden, just behind the Village Hall at 106 East South Street in West Salem. All ages are welcome, but youth age 13 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. The free workshop will cover topics such as planning and designing raised beds, soil and water needs, preparing garden beds for spring, & companion planting fruits and vegetables with flowers. Led by Small Farms Educator Katie Bell and Master Gardener Jessica Bare, all are invited to learn more about the great alternative to a traditional garden, a chance to use less space for small-scale vegetable harvesting that’s more accessible. (MT. CARMEL) The Indiana Oil & Gas Association and the Illinois Petroleum Resource Board are teaming up with Wabash Valley College to host tomorrow’s Oilfield Safety Day in Mt. Carmel. At last check, there were several seats available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The day will feature various sessions on safety awareness, using protective equipment, and much more, plus giveaways and food available.
