REGULAR BI-MONTHLY MEETING THIS WEEK

(NEWTON) The Newton City Council met in regular session this past Tuesday night. The Council : approved the payment of bills as presented – $227,781 in accounts payable and $57,710 in pre-paid accounts : approved the purchase and installation of a Square D Motor for the Wastewater Department worth $5,422 : approved $3,500 to repair the front axle seal and rear motor seal on the City’s New Holland TL 260 utility tractor : agreed to hire Jacob Lindemann as a Wastewater Plant Operator with a start date of July 13th, 2026 : agreed to hire Alex Wagner as a Water Plant Operator with a start date of July 14th, 2026 : approved an ordinance to condemn an unsafe and dangerous building at 205 East Harris Street in Newton : authorized an asbestos inspection and to seek bids for the demolition project at 805 Foster Street in Newton : approved a Special Event Application submitted by Peoples State Bank of Newton for its Annual Customer Appreciation Free Ice Cream Social set for July 2nd, 2026, from 11:00 to 3:00 : noted the City of Newton’s Municipal Code will be updated to reflect the current 1% telecommunications tax rate administered through the state : and adjourned with no action taken after a 38-minute executive session to discuss potential litigation and personnel : next regular meeting for the Newton City Council will be July 7th, 2026.
